How dear to me is a resting place in al-Dahna,

For the forelegs of pale camels setting down their saddles:

A campsite for worn-out travelers, tossed about

By strange needs and lofty ambitions.

They rested upon their mounts' upper forelegs,

Having spread the sand's carpets beneath them.

Some barely touched by a taste of sleep,

And others bound by the bonds of weariness,

Until a rift startled the darkness,

Bright as the bald brow of a venerable man.

Then they rose, climbing up to their summits,

By ladders of hanging straps and mountains.

And there the gray doves' calling kept me awake,

Stirring a wound close to healing.

They remind me of bygone nights,

And the neck of the gazelle-doe and gazelle-buck.

And the days of youth were kind,

Gathered for us with the days of union.

Like breaths of wine, I drank deep of them,

In thirst—and like breaths of the north wind.

I say to her, as she coos with joy:

Your mood, O dove, is surely not my own.

We have grown far apart: one called a sufferer,

Entangled in passion, and one called free of care.

She returns to little unadorned nestlings,

And after a short while they are yearlings.

For them, a craftsman bestows upon their necks

    Necklaces not interspersed with pearls.

Bare, they remain so all the while, until

She clothes them in fine robes that never wear.

And to each little blue one whose steps are short,

Like the clan's elder, bowed before the tall spears.

Your merriment comes before death's night visitation,

And before the return of the nights' onslaught.
