تُرىI wonder تَسمَحُallow الأَيّامُthe days ليfor me أَنto أَراكُمُI see you
وَأَشكوand I lament غَراميmy passion مُنذُsince شَطَّتgrew distant نواكُمُyour separation
Will the days, I wonder, allow me to see you
Will the days allow me to see you again
and lament my passion since you went far away?
And pour out my love since you left?
وَأَعظَمُand the greatest ماwhat أَلقاهُI endure it أَنّيَthat I لَمdid not أَجِدI find
لِقَلبيfor my heart سلوّاًsolace عَنكُمُfrom you بِسِواكُمُthrough someone other than you
And my greatest suffering is that I have found
My greatest agony is that I could not find
no solace in anyone else for my heart's longing for you.
Solace for my heart except through you.
فَيالَيتَso, if only أَنّيthat I لَمnot أَكُنI was بِنتُI parted عَنكُمُfrom you
وَياand oh لَيتَif only أَنّيthat I ماnot عَرَفتُI knew هَواكُمُlove for you
So, if only I had never parted from you,
If only I had not been away from you
and oh, if only I had never known love for you!
If only I had not known this passion for you
وَإِنّيand indeed I لأَرضىI am surely content أَنto أَموتَI die صَبابَةًardent longing
إِذاif كانَis مَوتيmy death فيin الهَوىlove مِنof رِضاكُمُyour pleasure
And I would indeed be content to die of longing,
Yet I would be content to die young
if my death from love would please you.
If my death would please you, my love.
فَإِنso if تَسمَعواyou hear يَوماًone day بِمَنof someone who ماتَdied حَسرَةًsorrow
وَشَوقاًand longing إِلىfor الأَحبابِthe loved ones إِنّيindeed I لذاكُمُsurely that one
So if one day you hear of someone who died of sorrow
So if you hear one day of one who died of sorrow
and yearning for loved ones—indeed, I am that one.
And longing for her beloved, know that is me
أَراكُمI see you بِقَلبيwith my heart حَيثُwherever كُنتُمyou may be تَفَكُّراًin thought
وَإِنeven though لَمnot تَكُنbe عَينيmy eye بِرَغميagainst my will تَراكُمُsees you
In thought I see you with my heart, wherever you are,
I see you in my heart wherever my thoughts turn
even though, against my will, my eye does not see you.
Even if my eyes against my will cannot see you
