كُنّاwe were بِبُستانٍin a garden لَدىamong مَعشَرٍa company
كُنّا بِبُستانٍ لَدى مَعشَرٍ
كَأَنَّناas though we were السُنَّةُthe Sunnis فيamong الشيعَهthe Shiites
كَأَنَّنا السُنَّةُ في الشيعَه
We were in a garden among a company,
We were in an orchard with companions,
as though we were Sunnis among Shiites.
As though we were the Sunnah amidst the Shi'ites.
مِنof شَجَرِthe trees of الجامِعِthe congregational mosque أَشجارُهُits trees
مِن شَجَرِ الجامِعِ أَشجارُهُ
وَنَحنُand we فيهِin it كَدُمىlike statues البيعَهthe church
وَنَحنُ فيهِ كَدُمى البيعَه
Its trees are of the mosque's trees,
Its trees were from the Tree of the Mosque,
and we within it are like statues in the church.
While we in it were like idols for sale.
لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor it فيon الأَرضِthe earth مِنany مُشبِهٍa counterpart
لَيسَ لَهُ في الأَرضِ مِن مُشبِهٍ
إِلّاexcept سَرابٌa mirage لاحَappeared فيon قيعَهa barren plain
إِلّا سَرابٌ لاحَ في قيعَه
There is nothing like it on earth,
It has no equal on earth,
except a mirage that appeared on a barren plain.
Except a mirage gleaming in the wasteland.
