The bān tree is abashed by the stature of him who cleft my heart.

So my mind is full, brimful with sorrow.

A gazelle struck me with a passion that never departs; and his

habit, if I seek him, is abandonment and estrangement.

Hearts pluck from him the fruits of desire with

the eyes' glances, furtively—for he is a garden.

And the gardens of beauty remain lovely

through him; every season, through him, is April.

And the soul will not desist from drinking love's wine

from his cheeks, where it finds solace and sweet basil.

He is harsh toward his two lovers, displeased—so when

will mercy and favor from him be mine?

For his rump is ample, sated and well-watered,

and his waist is lean, famished and thirsty.

When his tress sways, it is no wonder

if a serpent sways above a dune of sand.

    تِلكَ السُيوفُ لَها الأَجفانُ أَجفانُ

    From his black eyelids, white swords are unsheathed;

those swords have eyelids for scabbards.
