    Tears whose two strands fell from a fortitude grown frail,

    And a lovesick man whose heart was struck, so he sighed.

    وَالدَمعُ أَعصى ما يَكونُ مُنَهنَها

    I restrained some of my tears, but they surged forth rebelliously;

    And tears are most disobedient when restrained.

    O you who lodged sleeplessness in my eyelid while bidding farewell,

    And turned away, leaving the heart distraught with love!

    My life, through nearness and its ease, had been

    A drowse; my passion for her has now awakened.

    فَثَوى كَئيباً بِالوَداعِ مُتَوَّها

    They hid the crescent moons within canopies and turned away;

    So he remained, saddened by farewell and driven to sigh.

    Coquetry swayed their figures; and in admiring envy,

    The arak tree shook its branches in imitation.

    And indeed, they sent the branches features

    Of their own, and the oryx their eyes' glances.

    وَمُلَثَّمينَ وَكَالأَهِلَّةِ أَوجُها

    Unveiled, they appear like the shining sun;

    And veiled, their faces are like crescent moons.

    And one whose beauty is beyond comparison—

    For him, I have become incapable of forgetting.

    أَهلاً بِما مَنَحَ الحَبيبُ وَما نَهى

    He bestowed aversion and forbade the eyelids sleep;

    Welcome what the beloved bestowed and what he forbade!

    What path leads to aversion, when his intercessor

    Is a face whose verdict carries weight, whichever way it turns?

    His glances are his swords, and his spearhead

    Is his drowsy gaze, whether he is earnest with us or plays.

    And how often I was plagued by a reproacher of my love for him,

    Fiercely contentious and eloquent in dispute!

    The eloquent man strove hard, but I sent him back,

    His rein turned away from reproach, tongue-tied.

    Oh, how often I rebuked the love-crazed one, but he did not desist!

    And I forbade him so he might recover his senses, but he did not stop.

    وَمِنَ الشَقاوَةِ ما يَلَذُّ وَيُشتَهى

    I relish and desire my sickness for him;

    And some misery is delightful and desired.

    And an unknown wilderness I skirted

    On a noble she-camel, drawn lean as she folded up the wasteland.

    So I showed her its white patches on a night

    When the full moon on its horizon was like Suha.

    It brought its cloud with its lightning's flash,

    And rain that wept for joy at thunder laughing aloud.

    She is urged toward the encircling ocean, Muhammad,

    The one who opened mouths with the hand of bounty.

    For al-Kamil, son of al-Adil al-Mansur, indeed,

    Generosity called out when he summoned it, proclaiming his worth.

    O king, without whom there would not

    Be anyone among mankind resembling his father!

    بِمُحَمَّدٍ تَزهو كَأَحسَن ما زَها

    Damascus, lofty, boasted over the lands;

    In Muhammad she shines like the finest thing that ever shone,

    Like Muhammad when he arrived at Yathrib,

    Emigrating, bestowing gifts, and acclaimed.

    The fortunate one, perfect in his qualities, has become like

    The sun at its zenith—nay, more illustrious still.

    Watchful over the kingdom, a mender of breaches,

    Ever distinguished within it, and rousing others.

    His wishes came to him in Yemen; never did the

    Sagacious chief slacken in his endeavor, nor grow weak.

    So the victory of victories brought him, his face whitened,

    Yet blackened faces among the enemies.

    With a breaker of resolves, fearsome of blade,

    He is absorbed in earnest effort, never distracted from him.

    فَبِها ينالُ مِنَ الأَعادي ما اِشتَهى

    So rise against him with a Shadhian resolve;

    Through it he gains from the enemies whatever he desires.

    Indeed, the kingdoms have become, in your hands,

    An endowment reserved for you, like Amid and al-Ruha.

    وَلَدَيكُمُ المَأوى لَها وَالمُنتَهى

    All kingdoms are a garden—rather, a lote tree;

    And with you are its refuge and its furthest bound.

    وَسِواكُمُ مِثلُ الثُرَيّا وَالسُها

    You are suns—rather, rising full moons;

    And all others are like the Pleiades and Suha.

    ما فيكُمُ مَن ساعَةً عَنها لَها

    Your alms have preserved your kingdom for you;

    None among you has been distracted from them for an hour.

    No lion in the thicket, snarling and drawing his lips back

    From his fangs, roaring and growling,

    Ever strikes more savagely than he, when

    The spirited, poised steeds recoil from him.

    لَم يَألُ في دَرءِ الخُطوبِ المِدرَها

    He promises rewards, fulfilling his promises;

    The champion spares no effort in warding off calamities.

    Take it, perfected in wisdom, from an eloquent man

    Who has surpassed al-Afwah in beauty of speech.

    A praise-song: if the deaf stone came to have

    Hearing and were recited a verse of it, it would roll about.

    And when the reciter sings it in a gathering,

    Lifeless things thrill; if they could, they would quiver.
