Rise, then unveil the daughter of the green vine,
Rise, pour the green date wine
In the cup, like a red ruby.
In the cup, like a red ruby
راحٌwine مَتىwhen ماever (emphasis) أَشرَقَتshe shone فيin كَأسِهاher cup

Wine—whenever she shines in her cup,
Delight, whenever it shines in her cup
Her rays spill over the seated companions.
Overflowing, its glow on those seated
فيfor شُربِهاdrinking her مِنfrom كُلِّevery قَلبٍheart شَهوَةٍa longing
فَكَأَنَّهاso it is as though she خُلِقَتwas created مِنَfrom الأَهواءِthe passions
From every heart comes a longing to drink her,
In drinking it, from every heart a desire
So it is as though she were created from passions.
As though it was created from passions
وَإِذاand when اِنجَلَتshe appeared فيin اللَيلَةِthe night الليلاءِpitch-dark
هَزَمَتshe defeated ظَلامَthe darkness اللَيلِof the night بِالآلاءِwith blessings
And when she appears in the pitch-dark night,
And when it sparkles in the dark night
She routs the darkness of night with blessings.
It defeats the darkness of night with brilliance
ياO لائِميyou who reproach me فيfor شُربِهاdrinking her أَغرَيتَنيyou enticed me
بِاللَومِwith reproach فيهاconcerning her غايَةَthe utmost extent الإِغراءِof enticement
O you who reproach me for drinking her, you have enticed me
Oh you who blame me for drinking it, you have tempted me
Through your reproach of her, to the utmost.
With faulting it, the height of allure

Ah, how delightful she is in autumn and other seasons,
Oh how good it is in autumn and otherwise
At all times and hours,
At all times and occasions

From the hand of a brown-skinned Babylonian, whose figure
From the palm of a tawny Babylon
Sways like a straight, dark-brown spear.
That sways like the blackish gazelle

And the cup has scattered upon his cheeks
While the cup has strewn on his cheeks
Anemone petals, an enticement for the beholder.
Petals of anemones, a seduction to the onlooker

His eyes are two narcissi, but the two roses
His eyes, two narcissi, but his rosy cheeks
Of his cheeks are filled with the blood of the entrails.
Were made from the blood of hearts
ماnot العَيشُlife إِلاexcept فيin المدامِwine وَشُربِهاand drinking her
لَكِنbut مَعَwith الظُرَفاءِthe witty وَالعُقَلاءِand the sensible
Life is found only in wine and drinking her,
What is life but for wine and drinking it
Yet only in the company of the witty and the sensible.
But with the virtuous and the wise
