May Time rescue me; perhaps it
May time one day grant me relief, and may it
will say to one whose fortune stumbles, 'May he rise again!'
Say to one fallen on hard days, enough misfortune!
أَرقدةُis it the sleep of أَهلthe people of الكَهفِthe Cave ياO حَظِيَmy fortune انتَبِهawake!

فَإِنّي حُرِمتُ النَّومَ إِلا أَقَلَّهُ
Is this the sleep of the People of the Cave? O my fortune, awake!
O companions in the cave, my fate, awake,
For I have been denied sleep, except the merest little.
For I am deprived of sleep but for so little.

أَجَل وَخَليلاً لَستُ أُمنَحُ عَذلَهُ
Show me a beloved whose union is not denied me,
Let me see my beloved, I am not banned from his union,
yes, and a friend whose reproach I am not granted.
Nor am I, as his friend, denied forgiving his mistakes.

And I am smitten with a moon rising above a bān-tree's tender shoot;
My moon that rises over the trace of separation
his waist complained of his haunches' weight when they burdened it.
Whose waist complains when the saddle weighs heavy on it.
لَهُhis are اللَحَظاتُthe glances اللاءِwhich لَمnot لَمnot يَرنُhe gazed رامِياًaiming

His are those glances: never, never has he gazed, aiming
He has glances that kill, why did he not see
them at one untouched by love, without their pledging to kill him.
Me alone with them, so they could complete his murder?

بَلى أَتَمَنّى أَن أُقَبِّلَ رِجلَهُ
And I do not wish, in private, to kiss his palm;
I do not wish, when alone with his mouth, to kiss it,
nay, I wish to kiss his foot.
Rather I wish I could kiss his feet.

He assumed a potentate's rule over my heart,
The Almighty took charge of my heart,
so for all time he never feared dismissal from it.
So he did not fear removing him for eternity.

رَضيتُ بِوَعدٍ مِنهُ يُكثِرُ مَطلَهُ
And no one in love is as contented as I:
None in love is as content as I am,
I accepted a promise from him whose fulfillment he keeps delaying.
Pleased with a promise from him, though he delays fulfilling it.
فَفيso in راحَتيmy relief مِنfrom هَجرِهِhis abandonment لَستُI am not طامِعاًhopeful

وَمِن تَعَبي أَن لَستُ آمَلُ وَصلَهُ
So I do not hope for relief from his abandonment,
In being at ease from his estrangement, I am not hopeful,
and part of my suffering is that I do not hope for union with him.
And from my misery that I do not hope for our union.

وَقَد رَكِبَ العُشّاقُ قَلبِيَ سَهلَهُ
I rode the rough terrain of agonizing love,
I have ridden the cheerful, easy love,
while lovers, O my heart, have ridden its smooth ground.
While lovers have ridden my easy heart.

And I am glad that his abandonment has made me a phantom;
I was happy that I am a phantom of his estrangement,
perhaps I may travel by night to visit, like one.
So I may travel, like him, to visit.

I have lost my endurance away from a pampered beloved,
I lost my patience with a pampered beloved
with whom the sorrowful, love-bewildered heart is infatuated.
Whose sad heart sways sadly.

لَدَيَّ فَمالي لا أُفارِقُ ذَحلَهُ
Is vengeance owed to Time, that it seeks its revenge
Time has a grudge, so it seeks its vengeance,
from me? Why can I not escape its grudge?
While I - what can I do but not leave its possessions?

My Time shot at me from bows of cruelty;
My time has cast me away with severe cruelty,
it aims its arrows at no heart but mine.
So none but my heart can straighten its arrow.

Am I denied bounty's drizzle, despite my learning in this age,
Shall I be denied generosity despite my manners towards it?
while the people's greatest fool is granted its downpour?
And shall it be granted to the foolish and vulgar of the people?

Then the capable man of merit blames his merit,
There the virtuous man regrets his merits,
and there the base ignoramus praises his ignorance.
And the ignorant man is praised for his ignorance.

I shall thank my Time, O Ibn Shukr, for
I will thank my time, O son of gratitude, because
through him it repented and came to act well.
It has repented until it started doing good.

A minister who has won eminence from every side,
A minister who gathered the eminent from all directions,
and freely been granted speech's obligatory and voluntary offerings.
And a king who made it a duty to pardon and bestow.

فَماso no أَحَدٌone فيin المَجدِglory حَلَّoccupied مَحَلَّهُhis station

A leader who leads the foremost toward the heights,
A leader who leads the early-risers to the highest,
so no one in glory has occupied his station.
None can take his place in glory.

He whitens calamity's face after its blackening
He clears the face of trouble after it had darkened
with fine speech, success attending its decisive words.
With fine speech, paired with success is its consequence.

So all learning falls short of his learning's reach,
No knowledge is below the limit of his knowledge,
and no merit on the racecourse can catch his merit.
No merit in the field can catch up to his merit.

Indeed, the woodworms [unclear reading] have yielded to the minister in fear;
Caterpillars have accompanied the companion of travel as shoes,
their mouths in the dust kiss his sandal,
Their mouths in the dust, kissing his shoes.

لِمَخدومِهِ لا شَتَّتَ اللَهُ شَملَهُ
as all the kings, through his counsel, have submitted
Just as all the kings were obedient to his opinion,
to his master—may God never scatter his company.
His master’s - may God keep his group together.

In him his master has a judge whose branch learning has refined,
He has in him a judge who knowledge refined his branch,
as deep-rooted glory has sweetened his root.
Just as glory sweetened his well-rooted origin.

So no one like him in judgment will be found after him,
None like him in opinion can be found after him,
nor have people seen his like in it before him.
Nor before him did people see his equal in it.

What he unties, Time will never see bound again,
So his solution is not what time considers a knot,
nor will Time see what he binds untied.
Nor are its knots what he sees as a solution.

Abundant in gifts, he never forsakes his earnestness;
Generous with gifts, he never parts from his generosity,
noble in character, he never indulges in frivolity.
Noble in qualities, he never commits joking.

No master of eloquence has counted his virtues,
His virtues cannot be counted by the most eloquent,
and can anyone count the sea's sand?
Can anyone count the sands of the sea?

To you, O Safi al-Din, one unemployed complains,
kept from work: consider employing him wherever you wish.
So look wherever you wish to employ him.

And O my time, be equitable and live righteously,
For here is Safi al-Din spreading his justice.
For this is Safi al-Din, spreading his justice.

With everlasting glory, made firm by God.

Rajab has come hastening to you in congratulation,
Rajab has come giving you its congratulations
with far-spreading good fortune—may God extend its shade.
With abundant good fortunes bestowed by God.

It has appeared a crescent in the sky as if
God had made it rise with your face's glad radiance.
Congratulating you, God has adorned it.

Stripper of the tips of lofty spears—never
Connecting the tips of glory, none before
of old did one with a blood feud gain his vengeance in it.
Wore the cloak, able to reach its hem.

No wonder the edges of power have weakened you,
as the lion takes fever, since you are its like.
When you were its pattern while being its shape.

Your letter: whoever passes evening and morning seeking refuge
Your book - whoever has found refuge in it
in it dons all the safety he has hoped for.
In the evening and morning, wears all expected safety.

And you are the one who has always, in every circumstance—
You, who in every situation, whenever
whenever we test him in adversity, we find his nobility.
Your nobility confronts an event, meets its nobility.

And never have you debated in the assembly of the sciences,
You were never in the circle of knowledge debating
there against its gathering, without silencing its champion.
Except they all fell silent from your compelling argument.

You have pledged yourself to winning praise, riding its rough paths,
You carry the burden of praise, riding its difficulty,
and bearing its burden in every arena.
And bearing it in all positions, entire.

So the eulogists continue to send you, with their praise,
to you their delicate poetry and their robust verse.
The delicate and solid poetry they have.
