حاوَلتُI tried تَهنِئَةَcongratulating الوَزيرِthe minister فَلَمbut did not أَجِدI find
ليfor me فيin الدُخولِentering بِبابِهِthrough his door مِنany مُسعِدِa helper
I tried to congratulate the vizier, but could find
I tried to congratulate the minister, but could not find
No one to help me gain admission at his door.
Anyone to help me enter through his door.
لَمdid not أَحظَI gain إِلّاexcept بِالقِيامِby standing up لِمَنfor whoever أَتىcame
فَلَقَدfor indeed دُفِعتُI was thrust إِلىinto المُقيمِwhat makes one rise المُقعِدِwhat makes one sit
I gained nothing but rising for each person who came;
I gained nothing but rising for whoever came;
For I was handed over to one who makes men stand, then sit.
For I was subjected to what makes one rise and sit.
ياO حَبَّذاhow admirable فِعلُthe practice of المَغارِبَةِthe Maghribis الأُولىwho
تَرَكواthey abandoned القِيامَstanding up لِصادِرٍfor one departing فيat مَورِدِa gathering place
How admirable the way of the Maghribis of old:
How fine the practice of the Maghribis, who
They gave up rising for anyone, whether departing or arriving,
Gave up rising for a departing visitor at a gathering,
وَتَنَكَّبواand they shunned الأَلقابَthe titles فيماin what is بَينَهُمbetween them
كَفِعالِlike the practice of أَصحابِthe Companions of النَّبِيِّthe Prophet مُحَمَّدِMuhammad
And shunned honorific titles among themselves,
And shunned titles among themselves,
As did the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad.
Like the practice of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad.
