When I sensed the lightning in Damascus,
just before dawn, and my heart matched its flickering with its beating.
It reminded my fluttering heart of you.

And shed a tear that would not dry.

My heart rises and sets for you,
spends its nights and mornings lovesick and choking.
East and West, night and day.

And like a gazelle turning its neck.

Galloping, vigorous and sleek.

My skin grew loose and my bones weak.
