    وَكانَ بِها البازي المُطِلُّ عَلى النازي

    Al-Zahir Ghazi dismounted from his gray mare—his Shahba;

And upon her he was the falcon looming over all who rose.

He departed from her, not turning back toward a brother,

Nor a dutiful son; he departed, passing on.

And death's eagle circled over him within

Harim's sanctuary, overpowering it and the might of A'zaz.

He was indeed worthy of this world and its people,

To bring [enrichment] to life and put an end to want.

If death has shattered his throne—O God!—

Yet everyone is mounted upon the back of haste.

    وَكَم يَلبَثُ البازُ المُقيمُ بِقُفّازِ

    I see us all hastening toward the hour of our death;

How long can a falcon remain perched upon a glove?

The white has indeed turned black since his passing,

Like the plumage of a raven secluded on the mountain's heights.

Al-Zahir has gone into the belly of the earth, he for whom

Pale camels were driven through valley beds and desert tracts.

The kings of the earth lived in the shade of his bounty,

And he was a spreading shade, never shrinking.

Had awe protected anyone from death's grasp,

His valor would have afforded him a sure refuge.

His gifts to seekers of bounty were so lavish

They thought in their ignorance that he was jesting, mocking.

Masters of keen swords and lances looked to him in hope,

As the bearer of a staff hoped for his generosity.

By my life, I have made my grief for al-Zahir plain,

And spoken of Ghazi in no riddling words.

    فَكَم قَنَواتٍ جارِياتٍ بِمَزّازِ

    In Aleppo, the springs of his generosity flowed freely;

How many channels flowed at Mazzaz!

The greatest of kings was drawn from their necklace,

And the short necklace's centerpiece, its noblest, choicest jewel.

If mankind was made from Adam's clay,

Then you were made from the light of God's creation, O Ghazi.

You are he who baffled kings with matchless deeds,

And bridled them, tongue-tied, by a hint of accomplishment.

It grieves Islam that his saddles are overturned,

And fronts set backward where hindparts belong.

You dared, O plucker of his horses' tails,

And feller of a [mighty man], striking him with piercing pain.

In his surpassing dignity, he never lent an ear

    To a slanderer's slurs or a faultfinder's insinuations.

His smile of goodwill would reach you after

He came with eloquent expansiveness and concision.

Gatherer of his family's scattered ranks from every direction,

How utterly they rendered their enemies powerless!

He had no fault except fulfilling his promise

Swiftly, while never bringing his threats to fulfillment.

Who, after him, will care for orphans and widows,

Bestowing honor and dignity upon them,

And clothe them in their summer and winter

With the finest things a cloth merchant's chests contain?

In Aleppo, no neighborhood's people went without,

During the fast, a cook, a roaster, or a baker.

I ask heaven to send rain upon his grave,

Though within it lie seas that once sustained barren lands.

After him, let no saddle be fastened on a fleet horse,

    Nor any steed be startled by a spur amid battle;

Nor pure gold ever be brought forth for a suppliant,

But its radiance lies [hidden] after being displayed.

Nor let lean, purebred horses be led forth,

    Nor a spear be brandished in a wielder's fingers;

Nor let roaring war kindle its blaze,

Turning the millstone as letters cycle through 'Hawwaz.'

His reign has passed, guarded from a faultfinder's blame,

    From a scorner's mischief and a disparager's harassment.

    لَهُ في اللُهى قَندٌ حَلا فَهوَ أَهوازي

    He left praise whose fragrance puts musk to shame;

Its sugar is sweet upon the palate—sugar of Ahwaz.

No forest lion baring its fangs,

Whose bites sever joints like shears,

Is braver than he, charging into battle

After a routed foe who leaps in shivering fear.

God's peace be upon him as long as wealth is loved,

And, for its sake, a hoarder delights in amassing treasure.
