ياO سائِرينَtravelers أَوائِلَat the head of الرَّكبِthe caravan
رِفقاًbe gentle عَلَيَّwith me فَماfor ... is not مَعيwith me قَلبيmy heart
O travelers at the head of the caravan,
Be gentle with me, for my heart is not with me.
أَيُقيمcan ... remain? قَلبيmy heart فيin حَشايَmy breast وَقَدwhen already
عَبَثَتtoyed بِحَبَّتِهِwith its core يَدُthe hand of الحُبِّlove
Can my heart remain within my breast when
Love’s hand has toyed with its very core?
البَينُseparation عَذَّبَنيtormented me فَأَشرَقَنيand so made me choke
يَومَon the day of النَوىparting بِالبارِدِon the cool water العَذبِsweet
Separation tormented me and made me choke
On cool, sweet water on the day of parting.
ياO أَيُّهاyou الرُوّادُscouts إِنif تَقِفواyou stop

O scouts, if you stop
Beside me, you will find water close at hand.

My eyelids at the campsites have
Poured so generously they left no need for the clouds’ rain.
قَدindeed سالَمتmade peace with عَينايَmy two eyes دَمعَهماtheir tears
وَتَجَلُّديwhile my fortitude وَالقَلبُand the heart فيin حَربِwar
My eyes have made peace with their tears,
While my fortitude and my heart are at war.
أَفَماdo ... not, then? تَخافُyou fear مِنof العِقابِpunishment غَداًtomorrow
ياO مَنone who يُعَذِّبُنيtorments me بِلاwithout ذَنبِa fault
Do you not, then, fear punishment tomorrow,
O you who torment me for no fault of mine?
ماnever عايَنَتbeheld عَيناكَyour two eyes فِعلَكَyour treatment بيof me
إِلاexcept وَصِحتُand I cried out العَفوَpardon ياO رَبّيmy Lord
Never have your eyes beheld your treatment of me
Without my crying, “Pardon, O my Lord!”
ياO أَيُّهاyou العُذّالُreproachers وَيحَكُمُwoe to you
زِدتُمyou increased وَقودَthe fuel of صَبابَةِthe longing of الصَبِّthe lovesick lover
O reproachers, woe to you!
You have added fuel to the lovesick lover’s longing.
لَمdid not تَبتَرِدgrow cool بِالعَذلِthrough reproach غُلَّتُهُhis burning thirst
بَلrather زادَهُit added to him كَرباًanguish عَلىupon كَربِanguish
His burning thirst was not cooled by reproach;
Rather, it heaped anguish upon anguish on him.
