تَعالى اللَهُ كَم أعر

تَعالى اللَهُ كَم أعر

ب في المَدحِ وَكَم أغرب

ب في المَدحِ وَكَم أغرب

Exalted is God! How eloquently I speak

in praise, and how inventively!

فَلِم أُبعَدُ مَع فَضلي

فَلِم أُبعَدُ مَع فَضلي

وَغَيري عِندَكُم قُرِّب

وَغَيري عِندَكُم قُرِّب

So why am I kept away despite my merit,

while another has been brought close to you?

وَما أَصدَقَ مَن قالَ

وَما أَصدَقَ مَن قالَ

مغني الحَيّ ما يُطرِب

مغني الحَيّ ما يُطرِب

And how truthful was the one who said:

“The neighborhood’s singer gives no delight.”
