    My tormentress, how long this estrangement and abuse?

    And have I any patience, when you have made me swallow bitter aloes?

    Is there distance but no nearness, displeasure but no favor,

    and reproach but no justice, betrayal but no excuse?

    Be gentle! You have torn my heart apart with estrangement.

    Protect it from this injustice; a reward will be recorded for you.

    Bid the dream-phantom come; for if it visits my bed,

    and I am not awake to receive it, then you are excused.

    And how can the dream-phantom visit one who spends the night suffering

    a blaze without embers, and drunkenness without wine?

    And were Mahru dowered for an hour of union

    with heaven's bright stars, her dower would still be too small.

    أَسيلَةُ مَجرى الدَّمعِ يَحسُدُها البَدرُ

    Long is the fall of her earring, slender her waist;

    smooth are the paths of her tears; the full moon envies her.

    And she smiles, revealing a mouth whose flash startles you—

    why, then, do they wrongly tell me that it is a mouth?

    فَلَيسَ لَهُ إِلا سَنا وَجهِها فَجرُ

    The night of one tormented by her love mirrors her tresses;

    he has no dawn but the radiance of her face.

    Her body is more delicate than clarified wine,

    yet within it is a heart as hard as rock.

    فَلا عُرفُها عُرفٌ وَلا نُكرُها نُكرُ

    She falsely accuses, does wrong at every turn, and complains;

    so her kindness is no kindness, nor is her cruelty cruelty.
