The white gazelles of Ramah have left the sanctuary's bān trees,

after gazelles there had flirted with me.

And gazelles at al-Sarim forsook me; so my

eyelids hold water, while my inward depths hold fires.

And how much grief I have swallowed at al-Jar'a!

My heart is full, brim-full, of its afflictions.

    تِلكَ السُيوفُ لَها الأَجفانُ أَجفانُ

    At Hazwa, the eyes of wide-eyed gazelles captured our souls;

those swords have eyelids for scabbards.

And I would pray for rain upon al-Abraqayn; whenever

lightning flashed before dawn, my heart lay awake,

until time's tyranny dealt cruelly with me over

neighbors, whose departure left Usfan empty.

And now, if Salma is not at Dhu Salam,

may no camel caravans kneel in that encampment,

nor may clouds visit it, pouring their rain,

near and low-hanging, just above the earth, in torrents.

For it guarantees her that she will never lack

the arar, qaysum, and buttercups it brings.

Alas, my loneliness for neighbors of ours who departed!

Through them we attained our wishes when we were neighbors.

Though their dwelling lies far from the eye's dark pupil,

yet they dwell in the heart's dark core.

How great my longing when their scout said—

and his word is trusted—“Look, here they were!”
