How can a lover conceal his love,

when his eyelids betray him on the day of parting?

Parting lodged embers of ghada wood in his heart

    since Wadi al-Ghada's inhabitants departed.

Yearning left nothing of him but his moaning,

so his visitors could not discern his body.

They are fair statues, swaying spear-like waists

above the sandhill, its dunes aquiver.

Was it their eyes that gazed, or its gazelles?

And did their figures sway, or its ban trees?

Can he wake from love's intoxication after their departure,

who never sobered while they were his neighbors?

And a pampered beloved, in whose love I am abased—

how lovely he is, if only his kindness adorned him!

His turning away from me has not marred him, nor

has it diminished him that estrangement is his habit.

O you who blame the restless, headstrong lover for his passion,

leave him: his rein lies in love's palm.

Do not obstruct the steed when it bolts,

if its field lies wide open before it.

A lovesick man: yearning spilled the water of his solace,

and its fires flared within his heart.

He wept and made his reproachers weep in pity,

and lamented the burning anguish his heart concealed.

Whoever is afflicted by his beloved's abandonment

abandons sleep, and his homelands grow inhospitable to him.

Alas for a heart that never gathered the fruit of hope

from the one it loved, nor had its sorrows dispelled!

If my time is to favor me with contentment

after vexing me, now is its season.

Whoever finds victorious support in Nasr need not fear

Time, nor can its vicissitudes make sport of him.

    أَوَلَيسَ يَغلِبُ شَكَّهُ إِيقانُهُ

    On Abu al-Fath, then, hope must rest;

does not his certainty overcome his doubt?

    سَيُميطُها عَنّي الغَداةَ ضَمانُهُ

    From wrangling with Time, I bear a chronic ailment;

his pledge will lift it from me tomorrow morning.

To Safi al-Din I appeal for aid against

a Time whose aggression has settled in my courtyard.

Its hands—far be such acts from him!—struck my flint,

and its ravening wolves ravaged my grazing herd.

For he is the one: no man is ever safe

from his times unless his protection reaches him.

The world has come to belong to the minister, and all

within it; nothing's defiance need be feared.

Were he to tell the sphere that turns all the other

spheres, 'Halt,' its rotation would cease.

And Safi's high ambition soared above it:

it is the sky, whose earth is that sphere's Saturn.

The rain and the lion, renowned as they are,

have both been humbled by his daring and his fingers.

I am a Mu'aydi: for anyone to hear of him

is better than to behold him with his own eyes.

I have come apologizing; who is there whose

tongue can alight upon the qualities of his nobility?

A Quss of eloquence becomes a Baqil before him,

tongue-tied; even his Sahban falls speechless before him.

Too proud to be seen as proud,

his place in eminence has therefore been made firm.

Humble, yet awe-inspiring: he is feared

by one whose heart is steadfast in wars.

Expert in the consequences of affairs, he has

the proof for every difficult matter.

His counsels turn back the enemy host

on battle's day, its structure shattered.

From the sultan's resolve he drew a keen sword

whose failure to strike or give aid is never feared.

    ما لِلبُروقِ خَواطِفاً وَمَضانُهُ

    Fate lacks his judgment and decisiveness;

not even streaking lightning has his flash.

For every rebel he has a warrior's fierceness,

bitter to taste; for the obedient, his gentleness.

No glorious bygone age has ever been

without his own age surpassing it.

How wondrous he is: though vizier, he is feared

in the realm by him for whom its crowns were bound.

And we say, when we see him in his audience hall,

like the sun: 'Who is Kisra, and what is his hall?'

Through him the world has donned its robes of beauty

forever; may his rule last as long as it does.
