لِمَwhy لاnot أَسُحُّI pour forth بِيَومِon the day of عاشوراءَAshura
لِمَ لا أَسُحُّ بِيَومِ عاشوراءَ
مِنfrom مُقلَتَيَّmy two eyes دَماًblood يُمازِجُmingles with ماءَwater
مِن مُقلَتَيَّ دَماً يُمازِجُ ماءَ
Why should I not pour forth on the day of Ashura
From my two eyes blood that mingles with water?
يَوماًa day بِهِon which قُتِلَwas slain الحُسَينُal-Husayn بِكَربَلاat Karbala
يَوماً بِهِ قُتِلَ الحُسَينُ بِكَربَلا
قَتلاًa slaying حَوىcontained كَرباًanguish بِهِwithin it وَبَلاءَand affliction
قَتلاً حَوى كَرباً بِهِ وَبَلاءَ
A day on which al-Husayn was slain at Karbala,
A slaying that held anguish and affliction within it.
عافَhe shunned الوُرودَcoming to drink فَماتَso he died مِنof ظَمَأthirst بِهِthere
عافَ الوُرودَ فَماتَ مِن ظَمَأ بِهِ
لماwhen أَتىhe came يَتَنَفَّسُbreathing out الصُعَداءَdeep sighs
لما أَتى يَتَنَفَّسُ الصُعَداءَ
He shunned drinking and died there of thirst,
When he came, heaving deep sighs.
وَالماءُand the water أَشكَلَbecame tinged red مِنfrom دِماءِthe blood of جِراحِهِhis wounds
وَالماءُ أَشكَلَ مِن دِماءِ جِراحِهِ
فَكِلاهُماso both of them فيin اللَونِcolor كانَwere سَواءَalike
فَكِلاهُما في اللَونِ كانَ سَواءَ
And the water was tinged red by the blood of his wounds,
So both were alike in color.
