Have I a protector from the eyelids of beautiful women?

And how, when the sovereign of passion is mighty?

And how can I hope for my heart to sober from love,

while its cups of unmixed wine keep circling to me?

And a slender-waisted beauty—union with her is paradise

for us, while her estrangement is hellfire.

    فَحَسبي عَذولٌ راحَ وَهوَ عَذيرُ

    My reproacher saw her and turned back, excusing me;

enough for me: a reproacher left as my defender.

She has a sweet smile and a mouth as though it were

pearls; within it, perfume mingles with wine.

    فَفي القَلبِ مِنها أَنَّةٌ وَزَفيرُ

    In love for her, the camps of my patience lie effaced;

so in my heart, because of her, are a moan and a sigh.

She passes Babylonian wine around to us,

which makes its way through the drinkers' bones.

Aged and tawny—you would think it,

so delicate, a hidden pronoun in the glass's verb.

And before us are narcissi and violets,

and fire, and blossom in the glass, and light.

And a singer—when he sang, we felt our hearts

fly in rapture out from between our ribs.

When he raises his voice late at night, he is accompanied

by second-course lute strings, bass, and treble at that moment.

When she releases the cup from her palm and turns away,

then every free man is a captive of passion.

For she has no equal in her beauty,

nor has Prince Sulayman any peer.

A prince who brings his spear back deep crimson,

while the soul roars with fear of death.

And witnesses among his enemies on the day he charges

are chests and throats, marked by the thrusts he deals.

Lo, the sons of Shadi are none but lions,

whose roar sounds amid the thickets of spears.

When they mount, you would think the armor upon them

clouds beneath which full moons gleam.

And if they charge, you would deem the foes before them

weakling birds, while they on their steeds are falcons.

    صَغيرُهُم في المَكرُماتِ كَبيرُ

    They are the men—men in the fullest sense—in might and valor;

their youngest is great in noble deeds.

Their hands on the day of combat are thunderbolts,

but in giving gifts, they are seas.
