رِدُواcome to drink مِنfrom جُفونِeyelids العَينِthe eye فَيضَthe outpouring of حَياrain السُحبِthe clouds
وَدونَكُمُand here you are فَاِستَوقِدواso kindle النارَthe fire مِنfrom قَلبيmy heart
Come drink from my eyelids the clouds' overflowing rain;
And here you are—kindle fire from my heart.
حَنَيتُمyou bent ضُلوعيmy ribs بِالفِراقِthrough separation عَلىaround الجَوىburning grief
وَغادَرتُمُand you left قَلبيmy heart جَنيباًa led mount مَعَwith الرَكبِthe caravan
Through parting, you bent my ribs around burning grief,
And left my heart a led mount with the caravan.
وَبيand within me غُلَّةa burning thirst لَوif تَعلَمونَyou knew إِلَيكُمُfor you
كَغُلَّةِlike the thirst of ظَمآنٍa thirsty person إِلىfor البارِدِthe cool العَذبِthe sweet
Within me is a burning thirst for you, if you but knew,
Like a thirsty person's thirst for cool, sweet water.
فَطَرفيso my eye وَنَوميand my sleep بَعدَكُمafter your departure ماnot تَآلَفاhave found accord
وَهَلand can يوجَدُbe found الإيلافَharmony مَعamid شِدَّةِthe fierceness of الحَربِwar
So my eye and my sleep, since you left, have found no accord;
And can harmony be found amid the fierceness of war?
وَتَوقٌand longing وَلَكِنand yet عوجِلَwas suddenly overtaken القُربُreunion بِالنَوىby separation
فَفاجَأتُso I surprised بِالتَوديعِwith farewell تَسليمَةَthe greeting of القُربِreunion
And longing—yet separation abruptly overtook reunion;
So I answered reunion's greeting with a sudden farewell.
وَماand whatever أَنسَI forget لاnot أَنسَI forget اِعتِناقَكَyour embrace ساعَةَthe hour of الthe
قُدومِarrival كَإِلصاقِlike joining الصَبابَةِpassion بِالصَبِّto the lovelorn
And whatever I forget, I will not forget your embrace at the hour of the
arrival, like joining passion to the lovelorn.
فَإِنso if كُنتُمyou were بِالوَصلِwith union عَنّيfrom me بَخِلتُمُyou were ungenerous
فَجودواthen be generous بِكُتبٍwith letters لاnot أَقَلَّless مِنَthan الكُتبِletters
So if you have withheld union from me,
Then be generous with letters—letters, at the very least.
إِذاwhen هَبَّblows مُعتَلُّlanguid النَسيمِthe breeze بِسحرَةٍbefore dawn
أُناديI cry out مِنَfrom الشَوقِlonging المُبَرِّحِagonizing وَاalas كرَبيmy anguish
When the languid breeze blows before dawn,
I cry out in agonizing longing: 'Oh, my anguish!'
أَطَلتُمyou prolonged عَذابيmy torment بِالقَطيعَةِthrough estrangement عامِداًdeliberately
فَبِاللَهِso by God لِمwhy عاقَبتُمونيyou punished me بِلاwithout ذَنبِan offense
You have deliberately prolonged my torment through estrangement;
So, by God, why have you punished me for no offense?
ظَلَمتُمyou wronged مُحِبّاًa lover ماnot يُحِبُّhe loves سِواكُمُanyone but you
وَلَيسَand there is not لَهُfor him ذَنبٌan offense إِلَيكُمagainst you سِوىexcept الحُبِّlove
You have wronged a lover who loves no one but you,
And his only offense against you is love.
