The cooing of the gray doves upon their boughs
revealed their sorrows to love's companion.

His eyelid's spring obediently shed tears,
while their tears defied their eyelids.

Leave off blaming a lover enraptured
by the bān-tree doves upon their boughs.

He has rivaled the gray doves in their ringing cries,
and joined the she-camels in their yearning cries.

كَماjust as بَكَتthey wept شَوقاًwith longing إِلىfor قَرينِهاtheir mates
And he has wept with longing for his mate,
as they wept with longing for their mates.

And no one mourns the loss of Layla
in the dwelling's courtyard save her Majnun.

I would give my life for him whose glances do to me
what sword blades do when drawn from their sheaths.

It is as though Harut lies hidden within them—
alas for the lovers, undone by their ambush!

What harm would it do him if his sides,
like his figure, favored me with their suppleness?

His glances pierce our hearts,
so the hearts despair of any helper.
