أَماwas ... not? كَفانِيَwas enough for me طَرفٌa gaze مِنكَfrom you نَبّالُan archer
مَتىwhenever رَناit gazes فَهوَthen it is فَتّاكٌa ruthless slayer فَقَتّالُand a relentless killer
Was your arrow-shooting gaze not enough for me—
whenever it gazes, it is deadly, murderous—
حَتّىthat ضَمَمتَyou added إِلَيهِto it شامَةًa mole بَرَزَتappeared
ليto me يمنَةًon the right فَلَهاso it has بِالبالِin the mind بَلبالُturmoil
that you added to it a mole that appeared
to me on the right, throwing my mind into turmoil?
فَالخَدُّso the cheek وَالخالُand the mole فيin قَتليkilling me قَدِindeed اِشتَرَكاhave both joined
وَيلاهُwoe is me! مِمّاat what جَناهُhas wrought it الخَدُّthe cheek وَالخالُand the mole
So cheek and mole have joined in killing me;
alas for what cheek and mole have wrought!
أَنتَyou الَّذيthe one who سَلَّunsheathed مِنfrom جَفنَيهِhis eyelids صارِمَهُhis keen sword
وَلَحظُهُand his glance سَهمُهُhis arrow وَالقَدُّand the stature عَسّالُa quivering spear
You are the one who drew his keen sword from his eyelids;
and his glance is his arrow, his stature a quivering spear.
فَاِعجَبso marvel لَهُat him قَمَراًa moon لِلناسِfor people مِنهُbecause of him مَتىwhenever

So marvel at him, a moon whom people, whenever
he appears to them, hail as they hail the crescent of Eid.

He is a swaying bān-tree bough upon a dune of fine sand;
beauty rocks him in pride, and so he sways.

From love of the roses on his cheeks and the narcissi of his
eyes, may fortune never turn me away, through all time.
بيin me غُلَّةٌburning thirst وَشِفائيand my cure بَردُthe coolness of ريقَتِهِhis saliva
مِنfrom أُقحُوانِthe daisies of الثَناياthe front teeth فَهوَfor it is سَلسالُsweet-flowing water
I burn with thirst; my cure is the coolness of his saliva,
from the daisies of his front teeth, for it is sweet-flowing water.
مِنbecause of جيدِهِhis neck تُحضِرُgallop الآجالُthe wild-cattle herds فيin خَجَلٍshame

His neck sends wild-cattle herds galloping in shame
away from him, while death comes to lovers.

What harm would it do one adorned in beauty’s robes, if
kindness and graciousness came to us from him?
