Fakhr al-Din has no equal in battle

    when wars bare their shins.

Lions fear him in their thickets,

and the valley’s serpent when it bows its head.

And he dyes the swords with their morning draught

of clotted blood, and with their evening draught.

As though his enemies were loved ones

whose embrace he longs for in battle.

And no horses plunge into death when

war’s millstone turns, save the thoroughbreds among them.

The cloud of his palm poured down his bounty,

so the suppliants feared it would drown them.

Upon him is a robe of fine praise,

fresh and new, whose wearing out he does not fear.

The keenest sword the state has buckled—

the radiant Nurid state—within its girdle.

Nur al-Din sent forth from him meteors

upon the foes, not curbing their burning.
