    تَرتَجُّ مِن تَحتِها في الأُزرِ كُثبانُ

    Boughs swayed before us on the day of the tribe's parting;

    beneath them, sand dunes quivered within their waist-wraps.

    And they had turned their eyes within their sockets—

    those swords have eyelids for sheaths.

    So they resemble the gazelles of the thicket—but no:

    by God, no gazelles match them in beauty.

    The nightingales of Nu'man stirred our anguish.

    Ah, for the longing within us that Nu'man awakened!

    فَهَل لَها في اللّوى العيدانُ عيدانُ

    And gray doves delight us, singing in the moringa trees;

    so are the boughs at al-Liwa lutes for them?

    Those boughs bear, of every fruit,

    a pair—how wondrous! Do moringa trees bear fruit?

    In loving Zaynab, we lament the heat of our tears.

    Can fires, then, be kindled from water?

    So beauty has become springtime, and she its season,

    as though, among the months of the year, she were April.

    O my reproacher, I do not heed reproach

    concerning the one I love; nor can I forget my beloved.

    If you would counsel me in love, cease reproaching me.

    Alas for the lover plagued by reproachers—may they be no more!
