لَعَمرُby the life of ضِياءِDiya (radiance) الدينِal-Din (the faith) إِنّيindeed I لَمُظهِرُsurely revealing
لَهُto him كُلَّماall that قَدalready كُنتُI used to أُخفيI conceal وَأُظهِرُand I reveal
By the life of Diya al-Din, I shall surely reveal
For the light of faith, I declare
to him all that I used to conceal and reveal.
Every secret and openly confer
تُقَدّمyou give precedence to أَقواماًpeople عَلَيناover us وَإِنَّناand indeed we
لَأَخلَقُsurely more deserving بِالتَقديمِof precedence مِنهُمthan them وَأَجدَرُand worthier
You give others precedence over us, although we
You favor some over us though we
are surely more deserving of precedence than they, and worthier.
Are more deserving of such preference
وَتَرفَعُand you elevate صِبياناًboys عَلَيناabove us كَأَنَّهُمas though they
مَشايِخُelders عِلمٍof learning فيin النَدِيِّthe assembly تَصَدَّرواthey took the foremost seats
And you raise boys above us, as though they
You raise mere boys above us as if
were learned elders who had taken the foremost seats in the assembly.
They are wise elders leading in eminence
وَتَكسِرُand you crush مِنّاamong us أَنفُساًsouls عَرَبِيَّةًArab
بَسالَتُهاtheir valor لَيسَتdoes not عَلىunder الضَيمِhumiliation تَصبِرُendure patiently
And you crush Arab souls among us,
You break the proud Arabic souls
whose valor will not endure humiliation.
Whose patience won't stand oppression
أَمِنfrom among? بَقَرٍcattle بِالدَولَعِيَّةِat al-Dawlaʿiyya خِلتَناyou took us to be
فَتُورِدُهاso you bring them to water أَنّىwherever تَشاءُyou wish وَتُصدِرُand you drive them away from water
Did you take us for cattle at al-Dawlaʿiyya,
With cows from Al-Dawla you replace our clan
so you lead them to water wherever you wish, and drive them away?
Sending them wherever you desire and disburse
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I يَمَّمتُI headed toward غَيرَكَsomeone other than you لَمnot يَكُنwould be
لَدَيهِwith him مُقاميmy standing هَكَذاlike this حينَwhen أَحضُرُI appear
And had I turned to someone other than you, I would not have
Had I inclined to other than you, my place
such a standing with him when I appeared.
Would not be thus when I attend and converse
وَلاnor كانَwould يَلقانيhe meets me بِوَجهٍwith a face مُقَطَّبٍscowling
يَرُدُّhe returns سَلاميmy greeting خِفيَةًquietly حينَwhen أَجهَرُI speak aloud
Nor would he meet me with a scowling face,
Nor would he meet me with a frown
returning my greeting quietly when I give it aloud.
Secretly returning my greetings when I rehearse
وَلَكِنَّbut فَرطَthe intensity الوِدِّof affection نَحوَكَtoward you قائِديmy guide
وَلَستُand I am not اِمرَأًa man عَنfrom وُدِّهِhis affection يَتَغَيَّرُhe changes
But my intense affection for you is my guide,
But my affection for you, my leader, is excessive
and I am not a man who turns away from his affection.
I'm no man to change his love or diverge
وَقَدand indeed قُلتُI have spoken وَالمَصدورُand one with an ailing chest لاno شَكَّdoubt نافِثٌone who spits
فَعُذراًso pardon me خَلاكَmay it pass you by الذَمُّblame وَالحُرُّand a noble man يَعذُرُhe forgives
And I have spoken; one with an ailing chest will surely spit.
I have spoken and the utterance is undoubtedly foul
So pardon me—may blame pass you by; a noble man forgives.
So pardon me, for the criticized can excuse
لَئِنif indeed دامَcontinues هَذاthis مِنكَfrom you إِنّيindeed I لَظاعِنٌsurely departing
وَكَمand how many مِثلُهاlike it فارَقتُهاI parted from it وَهيَwhile it تَصفِرُit whistles
Should this continue from you, I shall surely depart.
If this continues, I will rebel
And how many like it have I left behind while it whistled!
And how many like it I left as they whir
رُوَيدَكَrestrain yourself كَمhow much هَذاthis التَّعَجرُفُarrogance كُلُّهُall of it
سَيَذهَبُwill pass away عَنكَfrom you الحالُthe present standing وَاللَهُand God أَكبَرُis greater
Easy now! What is all this arrogance?
Calm yourself, all this arrogance
Your present standing will leave you, and God is greater.
Will leave you and Allah is Greater
