هاتِbring it اِسقِنيهاgive me it to drink فَيهَجاwine
هاتِ اِسقِنيها فَيهَجا
تَصدَعcleaves بِالصُبحِwith the dawn الدُجاthe darkness
تَصدَع بِالصُبحِ الدُجا
Bring it; pour me that wine,
Bring it to me, so at dawn
which cleaves the darkness with dawn.
It may shatter into pieces
وَعاطِنيand pass me كَأساًa cup رَنَوwine (word begins here)
وَعاطِني كَأساً رَنَو
ناةٍwine (word ends here) وَقُلand say لاno حَرَجاsin
ناةٍ وَقُل لا حَرَجا
And pass me a cup of
And give me a cup, gently,
wine, and say, 'There is no sin.'
Without guilt or shame
فيin فُلكِthe ark of نوحٍNoah حُمِلَتit was carried
في فُلكِ نوحٍ حُمِلَت
وَقبلُand before that عاشَتit lived حِجَجاyears
وَقبلُ عاشَت حِجَجا
It was carried in Noah's ark,
In Noah's ark it was carried
and before that had lived for years.
And before that it made pilgrimages
كَمhow often قَدَحَتit struck إِذwhen قُدِحَتit was ladled out
كَم قَدَحَت إِذ قُدِحَت
زَنداًa fire-stick فَأَذكَتand so it kindled سُرُجاlamps
زَنداً فَأَذكَت سُرُجا
How often, when ladled out, it struck
How many drinks were drank when it was used
a fire-stick and kindled lamps!
Kindling the lamps
لَوif شَرِبَdrank المنطيقُthe eloquent speaker مِنof
لَو شَرِبَ المنطيقُ مِن
هاit أَربَعاًfour [cups] تَلَجلَجاhe would stammer
ها أَربَعاً تَلَجلَجا
If the eloquent speaker drank of
If Logic drank four cups from it
it four cups, he would stammer.
It would stagger tipsily
مُهجَةُlifeblood دَنٍّof a wine jar أُودِعَتwas entrusted with
مُهجَةُ دَنٍّ أُودِعَت
سِرّاًa secret يَسُرُّgladdens المُهَجاthe souls
سِرّاً يَسُرُّ المُهَجا
A wine jar's lifeblood, entrusted
The passion of humbleness was placed
with a secret that gladdens souls.
As a secret that brings joy to the passionate
هَلِdid ...? اِستَعارَborrowed المِسكُthe musk فيin
هَلِ اِستَعارَ المِسكُ في
دارينَDarin مِنهاfrom it الأَرَجاthe fragrance
دارينَ مِنها الأَرَجا
