أَلاAh! هَلis there إِلىto الخِلِّthe beloved friend الوَصولِdevoted وُصولُa way of reaching
فَمِنfor, from بَعدafterward ماnot الصَبرُpatience الجَميلُgracious جَميلُgracious
Ah, is there a way to reach the devoted beloved?
Is there no reaching the beloved's abode?
For now, even graceful patience is graceful no more.
After patience loses all charm and grace?
وَبيand in me غُلَّةٌburning thirst جِسميmy body بِهاbecause of it حِلفُa sworn companion of عِلَّةٍillness
فَهَلthen is there ليfor me إِلىto وِردِthe watering place of الشِّفاءِhealing سَبيلُa path
I burn with thirst; through it my body is bound to sickness.
My body aches, racked by love-sick malady;
Is there, then, a path for me to healing's watering place?
Is there no path leading to healing's place?
يُحَلِّئُنيbars me عَنهُfrom it الفِراقُseparation وَسَبسَبٌand a desert plain
عَريضٌbroad كَأَيّامِlike the days of الصُدودِrejection طَويلُlong
Separation bars me from it, and a desert plain,
Our long estrangement fills me now with pain
Broad and long as the days of rejection.
As many as the days when love grows stale
وَهَلand is it بِسِوىthrough anything other than قُربِthe nearness of الحَبيبِthe beloved وَوَصلِهِand union with him
يُبَلُّis quenched غَليلٌburning thirst أَوor يُبِلُّrecovers عَليلُan ailing one
And is it through anything but the beloved's nearness and union with him
Can anguish fade or sickness pass away
That burning thirst is quenched, or an ailing one recovers?
Except through union with what hearts inhale?
أَأَحبابَناO our beloveds أَمّاas for الأَسىsorrow فَهوَit is عِندَناwith us
كَثيرٌabundant وَأَمّاand as for الصَبرُpatience فَهوَit is قَليلُscant
O our beloveds, sorrow among us is
For us dear friends bring sorrow more than joy
Abundant, while patience is scant.
While patience we possess in small supply
إِذاwhen شَمَلَتblows from the north ريحٌa wind سَكِرتُI grow drunk صَبابَةًwith longing
وَوَجداًand with passion فَهَلthen is ريحُthe wind of الشَمالِthe north شَمولُwine
When a wind blows from the north, I grow drunk with longing
The wind blows south, and drunk on youthful wine
And passion—is the north wind, then, wine?
I wonder, can a north wind pass me by?
وَأَرتاحُand I rejoice إِنif هَبَّتit blows قَبولاًas an east wind وَكَمand how often جَرَتhas blown
قَبولٌan east wind لَهاfor it عِندَamong القُلوبِhearts قُبولُacceptance
And I rejoice if it blows from the east; how often has there blown
When it blows gently, I find peace of mind
An east wind that hearts have welcomed!
So gently to all hearts it does apply
أُليحُI fear إِذاwhen البَرقُthe lightning الحِجازِيُّfrom the Hijaz لاحَflashes ليbefore me
عَلىfor القَلبِthe heart مِنfrom وَجدٍpassion عَلَيهِagainst it يَصولُcharges
I fear, when lightning from the Hijaz flashes before me,
When lightning flashed from my beloved's land
For my heart, as passion launches its assault upon it.
My heart was pierced by pangs that made me cry
فَألزمُهُso I hold it fast بِالعَشرِwith all ten عَشرthe ten أَنامِليmy fingertips
وَيَنفُضُهاand it shakes them off حَتّىuntil يَكادُit almost يَزولُbreaks free
So I hold it fast with all ten—my ten fingertips,
I take his fingers, press them in my palm
And it shakes them off until it nearly breaks free.
Until they nearly slip away and fly
إِذاif اِفتَخَرَتboasts مِصرٌEgypt عَلَيناover us بِنيلِهاof its Nile
فَدَمعيthen my tears فُراتٌa Euphrates فيin دِمَشقَDamascus وَنيلُand a Nile
If Egypt boasts over us of its Nile,
When Egypt prides itself on having Nile
Then my tears in Damascus are a Euphrates and a Nile.
For me in Damascus tears are Nile!
يَزيدُincreases يَزيدُYazid القَلبthe heart شَوقاًin longing إِلَيكُمُfor you
وَثَوراand Thawra أَسيرُa captive of الوَجدِpassion فَهوَso it is جَليلُmighty
Yazid increases the heart's yearning for you,
My heart is filled with more love, more desire
And Thawra too; I am passion's captive, so mighty is it.
Prisoner of passion raging wild the while
وَأَبكيand I weep لَدىbeside باناسَBanas لِلبَينِfor separation وَالأَسىand sorrow
وَمِنand from بَرَدىBarada حُرُّthe heat of الفِراقِseparation دَخيلُan intruder
And I weep beside Banas for separation and sorrow,
I weep when parting's hurt begins to sting
And from Barada, the heat of parting intrudes.
And separation's coldness makes me sigh
وَفَوقَand above غُصونِthe boughs of البانِthe ban trees وُرقٌgray doves هَواتِفٌcalling out

And on the ban-tree boughs, gray doves call out;
Above the boughs of acacia, leaves like palms
Longings sway me whenever they sway.
Swaying along with longing passing by
تَبوحُshe speaks openly بِشَكواهاof her complaint وَتَكتُمُand she conceals دَمعَهاher tears
وَأَكتُمُand I conceal وَجديmy yearning وَالدُموعُand the tears تَسيلُflow
They voice their complaint and conceal their tears,
The branches whisper plaintively of grief
While I conceal my yearning and tears flow.
Yet hide their tears as mine flow freely nigh

فَليso for me وَلَهاand for her إِلفٌa mate نَأىgone far away وَهَديلُand a cooing lament
Both they and I have hearts wounded by parting;
Both she and I are sick from absence-pains
For each of us has a mate far away, and a plaintive coo.
Between us now estrangement's cloud and cry
أَلاAh! فَاِعذُرونيso forgive me فيfor مَقاليmy words فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I

Ah, forgive me for my words, for I
Please pardon if my words seem incomplete
Am so bewildered that I know not how to speak.
I know not what or how exactly to ply-

Peace be upon you, whose scent is envied by musk
On you be peace, its gentle nature shames
And lavender's fragrance, while the breeze is gentle.
Musk perfume. Softly now, O scented sigh!
