أَهلُthe people of دِمَشقٍDamascus لَهُمُthey have جامِعٌa congregational mosque
لَيسَthere is no عَلىon ماwhat فيهِin it تَعويلُreliance
The people of Damascus have a mosque;
there is no relying on what is in it.
بِالجامِعِin the mosque الصَّحنُthe courtyard (also: dish) وَلَكِنَّهُand yet it
مِنof كُلِّall ماthat which يُؤكَلُis eaten مَغسولُwashed clean
The mosque has a courtyard, but it
is washed clean of everything edible.
وَفيهِand in it أَشجارٌtrees وَلَكِنَّهاand yet they
لَمnot يُجنَwas gathered مِنهاfrom them الدَهرَever مَأكولُanything edible
And in it are trees, yet
nothing edible has ever been gathered from them.
