And a slender youth—his glance whispered with magic

to my heart, enthralled by him, so it stirred.

He smiled like lightning beneath the wing of his hair,

and kindled a lamp from his countenance.

And his enfeebled waist recited impromptu:

“I think the buttocks are tearing me apart with their shaking.”

So in his beauty there is no 'if only' or 'perhaps'

in either of which a detractor might find grounds for objection.

He became a paragon of beauty, just as in

noble deeds and eminence Qaraja became one.

And never has a noble steed's back stretched

beneath one like you, O Qaraja, when you are roused.

When the rams of battle butt heads, you are the

lion; there you see the rams as ewes.

You give the tall brown spears draught upon draught,

blood that slakes the spearheads and slender spears.

And he sends the seekers of gifts back, their

saddlebags full, after he has filled the mountain passes.

And chestnut horses return from you black,

from blood, when he plunges into the battle dust.

Al-Adil, the king for whom lives are pledged, saw you

as an ally who has never dissembled in all his life.

With your counsel he strikes his enemies from the flank,

just before war, as he enters the fray.

So, on the wrist of his kingdom, you have become the

bracelet for him, and above his head a crown.

You drive back a thousand, retreating in flight,

and give a thousand, rejoicing with delight.

So, O sea grown sweet and fresh,

    bestowing pearls, not bitter brine.

And delay has taken hold of your promise to me,

so, in its straightening, it has revealed crookedness.

My trusted friends came to congratulate me on it,

yet the worry within me has found no relief.

So fulfill it—for how many an impregnable fortress

you descended upon, then opened its great gate!

And live and be safe throughout all time, in which

you spare us ruin and the need to protest.
