لَقَدindeed سَرَّنيdelighted me لَمّاwhen سَرىjourneyed by night طَيفُapparition of مَيَّةِMayya
أَلَمَّتshe visited فَأَحيَتso she revived مَيِّتاًa dead man حينَwhen حَيَّتِshe greeted
I was truly delighted when Mayya's apparition journeyed by night;
She visited and revived a dead man when she greeted him.
وَرَدَّتand she made عَذوليmy reproacher تائِباًrepentant وَهوَand he قائِلٌsaying
يَداboth hands of العاذِلِthe reproacher المَغرورِthe deluded فيin الحُبِّlove تَبَّتِmay they perish
And she made my reproacher repentant, and he said:
May both hands of the deluded reproacher of love perish!
كَذاthe like of this ماnot رَأَتhas seen عَينٌan eye وَإِلّاor else فَأُعمِيَتthen may it be blinded
وَلاnor سَمِعَتhas heard أُذُنٌan ear وَإِلّاor else فَصُمَّتِthen may it be deafened
No eye has seen the like—or else may it be blinded;
Nor has an ear heard the like—or else may it be deafened.
فَقُلso tell لِلَّذيto the one who يَلقاكَmeets you فيin الحُبِّlove لاheedless (first fragment) هِياًheedless (remaining fragment)
أَردتَyou intended بِعَذليby reproaching me مِنحَتيmy boon وَهوَyet it is مِحنَتيmy ordeal
So tell the one who meets you, heedless of love:
You meant a boon for me by reproaching me, yet it is my ordeal.
عَذابُtorment of الهَوىpassion عَذبٌsweet وَماand how أَعجَبَwondrous الهَوىpassion
وَماand not هُوَit إِلّاexcept مُنيَةٌa cherished wish فيwithin مَنِيَّةِdeath
The torment of passion is sweet—and how wondrous passion is!
And it is nothing but a cherished wish within death.
وَكَمand how many خائِضٍone who wades فيin النارِthe fire حُبّاًout of love لِجَنَّةٍfor paradise
وَوَجنَةُand the cheek of مَنthe one whom أَهواهُI love him ناريmy fire وَجَنَّتيand my paradise
And how many wade through fire for love of paradise!
And the cheek of the one I love is my fire and my paradise.
فَمَجنونُfor Majnun of لَيلىLayla ماتَdied فيin الحُبِّlove مَوتَةًa single death
وَليand for me كُلَّevery يَومٍday فيin الهَوىpassion أَلفُa thousand مَوتَةِdeaths
For Layla's Majnun died a single death in love;
But I have a thousand deaths each day in passion.
