أَماindeed وَالَّذيby Him who يُحييgives life to الوَرىhumankind وَيُميتُand causes death
لَقَدindeed نَعِمَتdelighted عَينيmy eye بِكُمin you وَشَقيتُand I was wretched
Lo, by Him who gives life to humankind and causes death,
My eye has indeed delighted in you, yet I have been wretched.
بُليتُI was afflicted بِهَجرٍwith abandonment مِنكَfrom you ياO مَنthe one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
وَمِنand by خَصرِكَyour waist الباليwasted النَحيلِslender بُليتُI was afflicted
I have been afflicted by abandonment from you, O you whom I love,
And by your wasted, slender waist I have been afflicted.
تَصُدُّyou turn away وَتَجفونيand shun me بِغَيرِwithout جِنايَةٍan offense
فَلِمso why ياO مُنىdesire قَلبيmy heart الكَئيبِsorrowful جُفيتُI was shunned
You turn away and shun me though I have done no wrong;
So why, O desire of my sorrowful heart, have I been shunned?
ثَنانيturned me away الهَوىlove عَنfrom عاذِليmy reproacher فَأَناso I am الَّذيthe one who
هَوىplunged بيwith me هَوانُhumiliation الوَجدِpassion حينَwhen هَويتُI fell in love
Love turned me away from my reproacher, and I am the one
Whom passion's humiliation cast down when I fell in love.
جَفانيshunned me حَبيبيmy beloved بَلrather كَوانيseared me بِهَجرِهِwith his abandonment
فَفيso in كَبِديmy liver بِالنارِwith fire مِنهُfrom him كُويتُI was seared
My beloved shunned me—rather, seared me with his abandonment;
So in my liver I was seared by fire from him.
حَبيبٌa beloved بَرانيwasted me away حُبُّهُlove for him وَلَوَand if اَنَّهُthat he
يَجودُbestows generously بِتَسليمٍwith a greeting عَلَيَّupon me بَريتُI would recover
A beloved—love for him has wasted me away; and if he
Were to grant me a greeting, I would recover.
خَبَتdied down كُلُّevery نارٍfire غَيرَexcept ناريmy fire فَإِنَّنيfor I
بِهاin it قَدindeed عَدِمتُI lacked الوَصلَunion مِنهُfrom him صَليتُI burned
Every fire has died down except mine, for I
Have burned in it, deprived of union with him.
دَنَتdrew near دَارُهُhis dwelling مِنّيto me فَهاتيكَso that is دارُهُhis dwelling
فَياso, oh بُعدَهاits remoteness مِنّيfrom me إِذاwhen أَناI جيتُcome
His dwelling has drawn near me—there is his dwelling;
Yet how far it is from me when I come!
ذِئابُwolves الفَلاof the wilderness مِنon دونِهاthe near side of it وَأُسودُهاand its lions
وَأَعيُنُand the eyes حُسّادٍof enviers بِهِنَّby them رُميتُI was struck
Before it are the wolves of the wilderness and its lions,
And the eyes of enviers, with which I have been struck.
رُزيتُI was bereft بِنَوميof my sleep فيin هَواهُlove for him صَبابَةًthrough yearning
فَبِالنَومِso of sleep وَالطَيفِand the dream-vision المُلِمِّthat visits رُزيتُI was bereft
Yearning in my love for him has robbed me of sleep;
So I am bereft of sleep and the visiting dream-vision.
زيارَةُvisiting مَنthe one whom أَهواهُI love him لاnot أَستَطيعُهاI can undertake it
فَفيso in حُبِّهِlove for him ياO لِلرِجالِmen, to the rescue شَقيتُI was wretched
I cannot visit the one I love;
So I have been wretched in loving him—O men, help!
سَبانيcaptured me غَزالٌa gazelle فاتِرُlanguid الطَرفِthe gaze فاتِنٌbewitching
وَلَولاand were it not for الهَوىlove ماnot كُنتُI was قَبلُbefore سُبيتُI was taken captive
A bewitching gazelle of languid gaze has taken me captive;
And but for love, I would never before have been taken captive.
شَرِبتُI drank كؤسَcups العِشقِof passionate love صِرفاًunmixed فَآهِso, ah مِنfrom
كُؤسٍcups بِهاfrom them مِمَّنfrom the one whom هَويتُI loved سُقيتُI was made to drink
I drank the cups of love unmixed—alas for
The cups I was made to drink by the one I loved!
صَبابَةُyearning قَلبيof my heart فيin الهَوىlove لَيسَdoes not تَنقَضيend
سَلواask اللَيلَthe night عَنّيabout me كَيفَhow فيهِin it أَبيتُI spend the night
My heart's yearning in love does not end;
Ask the night about me—how I pass it.
ضُرِبتُI was struck بِسَيفِwith the sword اللَحظِof a glance مِمَّنfrom the one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
رَضيتُI consented بِقَتليto my slaying فيin هَواهُlove for him رَضيتُI consented
I was struck by the sword of a glance from the one I love;
I consented to being slain for love of him—I consented.
طَرِبتُI was enraptured لِتَغريدِby the cooing of الحَمامِthe doves ضُحَيَّةًat midmorning
فَكُنتُso I was كَأَنّيas though I بِالغِناءِby song غَنيتُI grew rich
I was enraptured by the doves' cooing at midmorning,
So it was as though song had made me rich.
ظَلَلتُI remained كَأَنّيas though I شارِبٌdrinking بِنتَthe daughter كَرمَةٍof a vine
بِهاwith it حينَwhen عوطيتُI was handed الكُؤسَthe cups رويتُmy thirst was quenched
I remained as though drinking the daughter of a vine;
With it, when the cups were handed to me, my thirst was quenched.
عَلىin كُلِّevery حالٍcircumstance لَستُI do not أَسلوcease loving عَنِaway from الَّذيthe one who
أَجَبتُI answered هَواهُhis love إِذwhen إِلَيهِto him دُعيتُI was called
Whatever the case, I do not cease loving the one
Whose love I answered when I was called to him.
غَزالٌa gazelle رَبيبٌhand-reared غازَلَتنيflirted with me لِحاظُهُhis glances
فَمَنso who مُنقِذيmy rescuer مِنهنَّfrom them حينَwhen غُزيتُI was assailed
A hand-reared gazelle whose glances flirted with me—
So who can rescue me from them, now that I have been assailed?
فَليso I have أَنّةٌa groan مِنfrom بَعدِهِafter him إِثرَfollowing حنَّةٍa yearning moan
فَإِنso if دامَpersists بيin me هَذاthis الغَرامُpassion نُعيتُmy death will be announced
So after his departure, I have a groan following a yearning moan;
If this passion persists in me, my death will be announced.
قِفاstop, you two نَبكِlet us weep مِنat ذِكرىthe memory الحَبيبِof the beloved فَإِنَّنيfor I
بِطولِthrough the length of بُكائيmy weeping فيin الدِيارِthe dwellings عَنيتُI suffered
Stop, you two; let us weep at the memory of the beloved, for I
Have suffered through my long weeping in the dwellings.
كَفىit suffices حَزَناًas sorrow أَنّيthat I أزيدُI grow صَبابَةًin yearning
إِذاwhen أَناI بِالإِعراضِby turning away عَنهُfrom him نُهيتُI was admonished
It is sorrow enough that I grow in yearning
When I am admonished to turn away from him.
لَكَfor you اللَهُGod ياO حاديdriver المَطِيِّof the riding camels تَرَقُّفاًgently
بِهاwith them فَهيَfor they تُدنيbring near الوَصلَunion وَهيَand they تُفيتُmake it slip away
God be with you, O camel-driver—be gentle
With them, for they bring union near and make it slip away.
مُنىdesire النَفسَof the soul أَنthat تَدنوdraw near الدِيارُthe dwellings بِأَهلِهاwith their people
فَمنso from بُرَحائيmy anguish بِالسَلامِwith a greeting مُنيتُI was afflicted
The soul's desire is that the dwellings draw near with their people;
So, through my anguish, I was afflicted with a greeting.
نَأَتgrew distant دارُهُمtheir dwelling عَنّيfrom me فَأَغرَبتُso I went to extremes فيin البُكاweeping
فَياso, oh بُعدَهاits remoteness عَنّيfrom me إِذاwhen أَناI جيتُcome
Their dwelling grew distant from me, so I went to extremes in weeping;
Yet how far it is from me when I come!
هُمُthey وَعَدونيthey promised me بِالوِصالِwith union فَأَخلَفواthen they broke their promise
فَمِنهُمso because of them بِنيرانِin the fires الغَرامِof passion صَليتُI burned
They promised me union, then broke their word;
So because of them I burned in the fires of passion.
وُعودُهُمtheir promises مَمطولَةٌdeferred وَوَعيدُهُمand their threat
نُشِرتُI was unfolded بِهِby it فيin لَوعَتيmy anguish وَطُويتُand I was folded up
Their promises are deferred; as for their threat,
By it I was unfolded and folded up in my anguish.
لَئِنif indeed دامَpersists هَذاthis بيwith me فَإِنّيthen indeed I لَمَيِّتٌsurely dead
وَماand no ليfor me سِوىexcept هَجرِabandonment الحَبيبِby the beloved مُميتُa cause of death
If this persists in me, I shall surely be dead;
And nothing kills me but the beloved's abandonment.
يَهونُis easy عَلىfor مِثليone like me هَوانِيَmy humiliation فيin هَوىlove
حَبيبٍa beloved عَلَيهِto him هُنيتُI was held cheap حينَwhen هَويتُI fell in love
My humiliation is easy for one like me to bear in loving
A beloved to whom I was worthless when I fell in love.
