    I complained, yet my frail state won no pity

    From a beloved whose body is adorned with beauty.

    ضَنَيتُ فَصِرتُ نِضواً كَالخِلالِ

    He is free of any trait deserving reproach;

    I wasted away, becoming thin as a toothpick.

    In love, the bitterness of unjust reproach grew sweet to me

    Through an utterance from him, like lawful magic.

    When he smiles, revealing his gleaming front teeth,

    He makes the gleaming pearls bow in shame.

    Through his radiance and his glance toward us,

    We see the beauty of the sun and the gazelle.

    And many a beauty sways above a sand dune

    Her bamboo-like figure with graceful poise.

    The full moon comes away from her in new-moon darkness

    When she looks upon it in her perfection.

    She withholds from me the hoped-for union with her,

    Though I have given her my soul and my wealth.

    Despite having reached middle age, I was afflicted

    With one beloved for his swaying grace and coquetry.

    Exquisite in beauty, yet kindness from him

    Is distant; union with him is hard to attain.

    فَواصَلَني اِكتِئابٌ غَيرُ آلي

    My gray hair came, and my youth left me;

    So sorrow kept me company, never relenting.

    Alas for an age when we harvested

    With the hands of its sweetness, the fruit of union.

    فَوا أَسَفي عَلى عَيشٍ مَضى لي

    Loved ones and pleasures have departed from me;

    Alas, how I mourn the life I once had!

    If nights grew long through their desertion,

    My nights grew short indeed in union with them.

    My drinking companion, bring it—heady wine,

    More delicate to me than the breath of the north wind.

    When it strikes the armies of sorrow, away flee

    The armies of sorrow as it cries, “To battle!”

    Pass round its cups—molten gold,

    Its head encircled by a necklace of pearls.

    Then with it loosen sorrow's fetter from me,

    And rise and be lively, that I may spring free of my fetter.

    Pass round the sun of wine until you see us

    Seeing the days as drunken as the nights.

    Among roses, as though in them the cheeks of the

    Beauties were exhaling precious perfumes.

    طَوالِعَ عِندَكُم قَبلَ الزَّوالِ

    It says, “Enjoy the suns of my bounty,

    Rising in your midst before they pass away;

    And my days are short, and the nights too,

    And my brief visit is like a dream-vision's.”

    For spring has revealed faces of loveliness,

    Elegant and exquisite in beauty,

    بِهِنَّ جَواهِرُ الحُسنِ الغَوالي

    And stock blossoms, whose fingers are tender;

    Upon them lie the precious jewels of beauty.
