In love I am flesh upon a butcher's block, because of what

I have endured of torment and agony,

From a girdled man with sleeves rolled back from his wrists,

Who sways between arrogance and swagger.

His clothing is grease-stained; whenever his face appears to you,

You behold above the earth a full moon of heaven.

Never does he stretch out his knife to cut his roast

Without showing us the most wondrous of things:

A gazelle whose sidelong glances strike more fiercely

Than a blade in his hands strikes the entrails.

He strikes at what has no reason, just as

He strikes with his knife at those who reason.

So marvel at a butcher: his eyelids' effect

On people is twice his effect on sheep.

At al-Fusqar, eyes are held fast by the im-

age of his face—those of anyone going or coming.

Were he not the sky's full moon, he would not appear

In a sheer blue tunic of the sky's own hue.
