If indeed Pharaoh came to Egypt alone,
If Egypt alone has sent forth Pharaoh
From Syria, then grew haughty and flaunted his authority,
From Syria, exalted and displaying a law,
فَقَدthen indeed قَذَفَتناhas hurled at us مِصرُEgypt مِنهاfrom itself بِواحِدٍwith one man

يُرى أَلفَ فِرعَونٍ وَلَيسَ لَنا موسى
Egypt has hurled at us a man from its own midst,
Then Egypt has cast upon us just one
Who seems a thousand Pharaohs—and we have no Moses.
Seen as a thousand Pharaohs, and we have no Moses.
فَعثنونهfor his beard لِلّؤمِof baseness وَالخبثِand malice مَعدِنٌa mine
فَعثنونه لِلّؤمِ وَالخبثِ مَعدِنٌ
فَصَبَّso may he pour down عَلَيهِupon it عاجِلاًswiftly رَبُّناour Lord موسىa razor
فَصَبَّ عَلَيهِ عاجِلاً رَبُّنا موسى
For his beard is a mine of baseness and malice;
So we sent him as a refuge for villains and knaves
So may our Lord swiftly pour a razor down upon it.
And our Lord hastily rained down on him Moses.

فَلَيتَ بِهِ مِن نَقمَةِ اللَهِ ناموسا
His nose held the arrogance of Nimrod, son of Canaan;
The arrogance of Nimrod son of Canaan puffed up his nose,
If only a mosquito were in it as God's vengeance!
So would that the vengeance of God be on him a Moses!

He bowed low, down to his mantle, feigning piety;
He bent till the tall trees, pretending
So it became a trap and a hunting blind for what he seeks.
To attain what he desires, devious and with laws.
