And a kohl-eyed beast, rough-pawed and ever leaping,
With kohl-darkened eyes, sharp teeth, and claws unsheathed
Charges at gazelles with claw and fang.
He charges at the Arameans with victory and fury

Victorious in his claws, when he stretches out his reach,
When he extends his victorious claws
He strikes with fangs whose edge is never blunt.
His outstretched paws have unstoppable blades

And many a gazelle’s eye upon his hide has gazed
How many gazelle eyes have peered in fright
At a gazelle being hunted, brought low by his might.
At his formidable prowess while hunting

And since the sun of day was called a gazelle,
And since the sun was called a gazelle
She has wished to set in the woods, for fear of him.
It has wished for a sheltering refuge from him

Al-Ashraf, the victorious king, is content with him,
Through him the noble victorious king is content
Though he is the best of men at shooting arrows from a bow.
Though people shy from his taut bow
هُوَhe النَمِرُthe leopard اليَقظانُwakeful لاnot الفَهدُthe cheetah نائِماًasleep
كَثُعبانِlike the serpent of موسىMoses وَهوَand he is أَحسنُthe finest مُنسابِone that glides
He is the wakeful leopard, not the cheetah asleep,
He is the wakeful tiger, not the sleeping leopard
Like Moses’ serpent, and he is the finest of gliders.
Like Moses' serpent, most beautifully formed
فَلاso may he never زالَcease to be موسىMusa شاهShah أرمَنَof Armen ظافِراًvictorious
بِكُلِّover every عَدُوٍّenemy لاnot بِتَأخيرِwith a delay of أَحقابِages
So may Musa, Shah of Armen, ever be victorious
Moses remains the triumphing king of Armenia
Over every foe, without ages of delay.
Vanquishing every foe, no matter how long it takes
