You withdrew from affection and mutual goodwill,

and turned toward estrangement and discord.

And an ignorant man made you tread blindly, until

he almost untied the knot of concord.

Is my honor exposed to what you hurl,

while another's honor is under the sheath's protection?

So have I, since you left, fallen short of noble deeds,

or grown tongue-tied in composing rhymes?

My holding back from reproaching you in certain matters

is for fear of high-handedness toward you, or estrangement.

    And many a crooked spear-shaft

has had its joints straightened by the straightener's pressure.

And I have two temperaments: one is harvested honey,

and the other takes the form of swiftly lethal poison.

I would be justified in requiting every group

for the wrongs they did me, and repaying in kind.

Away with you! For many a young man has sought to malign me,

and ended up content merely to break even.

So do not bring fire to the halfa grass,

for fire races through halfa grass.

I sent a lampoon to the man falsely claiming descent from ʿUqayl,

whose impact is like the thrust of awls.

So the poems left no more of him

than the sweeping winds left of dust.

Tell me how a winged creature can rise

when its primary and secondary feathers have weakened.

Why, and to what end, should I foolishly offer pure affection

to people whose affection for me is not pure?

Nor are the seas harmed when there rises upon them

a fleck of foam, floating along the shores.

And whoever compares heads with tails

has indeed compared torrents with drops.

Whenever you turn away from fellowship with me,

you will find me turning away from fellowship with you.

And who is there who treats a friend coldly

and does not find that friend cold toward him?
