وذاكand that منamong أطيبِthe most pleasant المعاشِlife; livelihood
You lavished thirst-quenching drink upon the thirsty,
You came to me thirsty and desperate,
And that is among life's sweetest pleasures.
And that is the sweetest life can be.
أيُّwhat خِداشٍscratching; contention علىover اشتياقيmy longing
منَfrom; among النّدامىthe drinking companions إلىtoward; for خِداشKhidash
What contention there is over my longing
What pleasure for my yearning soul
For Khidash among the drinking companions!
To have the thirsty come to me.

Then they [roused?] merriment after sleep,
After sleep, they indulged in play,
And revived—what a revival!
Then revived, fully refreshed.

زمانَكَyour time; your days اللِّينَgentle; soft الحواشيthe edges
Sahl, son of Ishaq, may we never lack
Sahl, son of Ishaq, may we not lose you,
Your days, so gentle at their edges.
Your gentle days and happy nights.
وطَّأتَyou softened ليfor me منof فراشِthe bedding of عيشيmy life

You softened for me the bedding of my life,
You smoothed the bed of my life for me
Though its bedding had been rough.
Though it had been rough and hard.
فظِلتَso you remained فيin البرِّkindness ذاpossessed of انكماشٍdiligence; zeal
وظلتُand I remained فيin الشكرِgratitude ذاpossessed of انكماشdiligence; zeal
So you remained diligent in kindness,
So I remain forever grateful,
And I remained diligent in gratitude.
And you remain refreshed and bright.
