إِذاwhen جَوَارِيكَyour slave girls غنّواthey sing
فَاطْرَحْthen throw عليناover us دِثاراa cloak
When your slave girls sing,
When your slave girls sing
then throw a cloak over us.
Throw a cloak over us
وارَيتَهُمْyou concealed them وَحَقِيقٌand it is fitting
لِقُبْحِهُمُfor their ugliness أنْto يُوَارَىbe concealed
You have concealed them, and it is fitting
And I saw them as they are
for their ugliness to be concealed.
It's fitting, for their ugliness, that they be concealed
قَدْindeed قُلْتُI said إِذْwhen قالsaid صَحْبيmy companions
لِمْwhy يَضْرِبُونَthey put up سِتاراa curtain
Indeed, I said when my companions asked,
I said, when my friends asked
“Why do they put up a curtain?”
Why is a curtain placed?
لَوِif اطَّلَعْتَyou looked عَلَيْهِمْupon them
وَلَّيْتَyou would turn away مِنْهُمْfrom them فِراراin flight
“If you caught sight of them,
Had you looked upon them
you would turn away from them in flight.”
You'd have fled from them in haste
