خَطَبْنَاwe wooed عاتقَthe maiden الخمرِof wine
خَطَبْنَا عاتقَ الخمرِ
وكانand was المهرُthe bride-price منfrom قَمْرِgambling
وكان المهرُ من قَمْرِ
We wooed the maiden wine,
We courted the wine's neck
And the bride-price came from gambling.
And the dowry was a moon

So we kept watering it
By the garden and the river.

We were handed it from dawn
Sipping it from dawn
To noon, to late afternoon.

But when night approached
We raced one another to give thanks.
We raced to give thanks
