باكياتٍweeping علىover المعانيthe meanings الأسارىcaptive

Those bewildered rhymes have indeed come to us,
Those rhymes have come to us, confused,

لاno نصارىChristians ترضىwould accept بهنَّof them هجاءًsatire
لمهاجٍfor a satirist ولاnor كلابُdogs النصارىof the Christians
No Christians would accept them as satire
No Christians would be pleased with their satire,

وإذاand if ماemphatic particle العَوَانُthe matron ضاقَwas strained بشيءٍby something
ذرعُهاher capacity كنتَyou would be عاذراًexcusing للعذارىfor the virgins
And if the matron finds something
And if the transgression becomes too narrow for them,

ماnot بُرَيْهِمُBurayhim منamong حميريmy donkeys علىin الصَّحْsobriety (word beginning)
وِsobriety (word ending) ولكنَّهُbut he حمارُdonkey السكارىof the drunkards
Burayhim is not among my donkeys when sober,
It's not my donkey they rode in the valley,
but he is the drunkards' donkey.
But the donkey of drunkards,
أيّwhat أَيرٍcock يهوىdesires القيامَstanding erect علىover منsomeone who
فوهُhis mouth للصَّقْرِfor the falcon واستُهand his arse للحُبارىfor the bustard
What cock would want to stand erect over someone
What shame in desiring to rise against one,
whose mouth is for the falcon and whose arse is for the bustard?
Whose mouth is for falcons and wrap is for monks.
