غيرُ مأمونةِ من الفُساقِ
This is heedlessness, Abu Ishaq,
This is an unguarded moment, O Abu Isaac
not safe from the debauchees.
Dangerous for the wicked

أصبحت روحُ صبره في التراقي
Busyness, not feigned distraction from a friend
A preoccupation that does not distract you from a friend
whose patience's soul has reached his collarbones.
Whose patience has reached its limit

يجمعُ الحبَّ أو أسيرَ افتراق
Each day he becomes a prince of union,
Each day becomes the prince of a gathering
gathering love, or a captive of separation.
That brings together love or a prisoner of separation

Seldom do hearts remain healthy

With the war of cups and goblets

كَ وهل للَّديغِ غيرُ الراقي
I have never called upon bounty save by drawing near
I did not call out except with intimacy
to you; and has the snakebitten anyone but the chanting healer?
And does the bitten one have any recourse but the healer?

Take me by the arm before the poison gains the lead,
Take me by my forelock before the sun races ahead
and the antidote's power comes undone.
And the trick of the shield dissolves

Deprived of their share of the just king

I wed the noblest verse to the noblest of creation;
The best of poetry married the best of people
so let no generous dowry pass her by.
So no noble dowry befits her
