بَعْدَ مالي صبرٌ ولا لي قَرارُ

بَعْدَ مالي صبرٌ ولا لي قَرارُ

The pickpocket stole my money from me; I have no

patience after losing my money, nor any peace.

طَرَّها جملةَ تلألأ في الأي

طَرَّها جملةَ تلألأ في الأي

دي كما قد تلألأ الأقمارُ

دي كما قد تلألأ الأقمارُ

He stole it all; it glittered in the hands

as the moons have glittered.

لم يطرَّ الطرارُ مالي ولكنْ

لم يطرَّ الطرارُ مالي ولكنْ

إنما طرَّ عقليّ الطرّار

إنما طرَّ عقليّ الطرّار

The pickpocket did not steal my money, but

it was only my mind the pickpocket stole.

أين حِسّي وأين فكريَ ضَلَّ ال

أين حِسّي وأين فكريَ ضَلَّ ال

حسُّ عنِّي وَضلَّتِ الأفكار

حسُّ عنِّي وَضلَّتِ الأفكار

Where are my senses, and where is my thought? My senses have strayed

from me, and my thoughts have strayed.

صُنْتُها في الإِزارِ خوفاً وإِشفا

صُنْتُها في الإِزارِ خوفاً وإِشفا

قاً عليها فلم يَصُنْها الإزار

قاً عليها فلم يَصُنْها الإزار

I guarded it in my waist-wrap, out of fear and concern

for it; yet the waist-wrap did not guard it.

حلَّ عنها كملحةِ البَصرِ اللاَّ

حلَّ عنها كملحةِ البَصرِ اللاَّ

مِحِ في حيثُ زاغتِ الأبصار

مِحِ في حيثُ زاغتِ الأبصار

He untied the wrap from around it, like a flash of the glancing eye,

where gazes wandered.

قَدَرٌ لم يكنْ لها من محيصٍ

قَدَرٌ لم يكنْ لها من محيصٍ

عنه سبحانَ مَنْ له الأَقدار

عنه سبحانَ مَنْ له الأَقدار

It was fate; my money could find no escape

from it. Glory be to Him to whom all destinies belong!
