The lord of men summoned me

    to kindness and companionship:

    Ubayd Allah, possessor of glory,

    of generosity and valor,

    and wearer of finery beyond

the reach of every other wearer.

So, if I could, I would hasten

on my two eyes and my head,

    and leave the ewers

    praying toward the cup.

Nor would I falter at drinking

    from a goblet—no, nor from a bowl.

And I would race toward drunkenness,

and there is no harm in drunkenness.

Nor would I leave devoid of merriment

    my place among my companions,

    crowned with a garland

    of roses or myrtle,

beside a palace whose foundations have become

    the noblest of foundations.

    How many people that palace

    has reminded of Paradise!

And how often it has fettered the ambitions

of those harboring grudges, through might,

with a hall clothed in a robe

    of splendor—how splendidly arrayed!

And a garden where we seem

to be in a slave dealer's shop:

for the single arrow of a glance,

within it lie a thousand targets.

    Abu al-Qasim, O you mountain,

    steadfast mountain of generosity!

    And O noblest one adorned

with humankind's praise, or clothed in it:

so this is the light of my excuse; no

    torchlight has outshone it.
