فَيضُoverflow الدُّموعِthe tears وشِدَّةُand the intensity الأنفاسِthe breaths
شهِداboth bore witness علىto ماwhat فيin هواكَlove for you أُقاسيI suffer
The flood of tears and the strain of breathing
The flow of tears and intensity of breath
have both borne witness to what I suffer in loving you.
Bear witness to what I suffer for your love
لَبِسَhe donned الملاحةَbeauty ثمthen ألبسنيhe clothed me ضنىًwasting illness
شتَّانَhow far apart بينbetween لباسِهhis garb ولباسيand my garb
He donned beauty, then clothed me in wasting illness.
You donned harshness, then clothed me in estrangement
How far apart are his garb and mine!
Great is the difference between your garb and mine
ياO منone who يريدُhe desires وصالَناunion with us ويصدُّهand deters him
ماwhat قدmay يحاذِرُhe dreads منof كلامِtalk الناسthe people
O you who desire our union, yet are held back
O you who desire our union yet repel it
by what you may dread in people's talk:
Beware what people say should not deter you
صِلْنيunite with me فإنfor if سَبَقتْhastened إليكَto you ملامةٌreproach
أبداًever فَعَصِّبthen bind ماwhat يُقالُis said براسيupon my head
Unite with me, for if reproach should hasten to you,
Unite me with you, and if blame precedes you
at any time, then bind whatever is said upon my head.
Forever wrap your head against what they say of me
