Rebuff, abandonment, turning away, and haughtiness,

and stinginess, avarice, excess, and extravagance.

    فليس تَثني ولا تُلوي ولا تَعف

    Remoteness, parting, and distance—you have grown obsessed with them;

so you neither turn back nor turn aside nor pardon.

There is no kind of estrangement you know

but you have a share of it, my lord.

And to one who said, “Describe Abu Bakr’s traits

in love,” I said, “They surpass what I can describe.”

If the sun had a share of his traits—

one part in a thousand—people would wish it eclipsed.

For God’s sake, for God’s sake, do not kill me! I have no

offense against you, except that I am enamored of you.

I will have wasted your beauty if I do not reap its choicest part,

while life is young and pleasure newly begun.

For the rose, because of the beauty you see in its form,

is plucked before it withers on the branches.

O my lord, I am not content, in my love for you, to have

pages folded and unfolded between us.

If you deal fairly with me in what I seek

of union—if not, I shall claim my due.
