قويقQuwayq علىupon الصفراءِyellow bile ركِّبَwas constituted جسمُهُits body
قويق على الصفراءِ ركِّبَ جسمُهُ
رُباهits hills بهذاto this شُهَّدٌwitnesses وحدائقُهْand its gardens
رُباه بهذا شُهَّدٌ وحدائقُهْ
Quwayq’s body was built upon yellow bile;
His body mounted upon the yellow
its hills and gardens bear witness to this.
He grew there, adorned by martyrs and gardens
فإنfor if جَدَّgrows intense جِدُّintensity الصيفِof summer غادرleaves جسمَهُits body
فإن جَدَّ جِدُّ الصيفِ غادر جسمَهُ
ضئيلاًfrail ولكنَّand yet الشتاءَwinter يوافقهagrees with it
ضئيلاً ولكنَّ الشتاءَ يوافقه
For if summer comes on in earnest, it leaves its body
And if the summer's heat departs from his body
frail—but winter agrees with it.
Feeble, yet winter suits him
