مُؤنِّبيmy reproacher فيfor وَصْفِdescribing عبّاسِAbbas
مُؤنِّبي في وَصْفِ عبّاسِ
أنَّبتَyou rebuked فيهconcerning him أوصفَthe best describer الناسthe people
أنَّبتَ فيه أوصفَ الناس
O you who rebuke me for describing Abbas,
My critics in describing Abbas
You have rebuked the best of all at describing him.
You described the best of people in him
الشمسُthe sun والدِّعصُand the sand dune وماand what بينَbetween ذاthis one
الشمسُ والدِّعصُ وما بينَ ذا
وهذهand this one غصنٌa branch منof الآسthe myrtle
وهذه غصنٌ من الآس
The sun and the sand dune; what lies between the one
The sun, the palm tree and what’s between them
And the other is a branch of myrtle.
And this is a branch of Aas
يُغْنيsuffices عنin place of الرَّامُشْنِthe minstrel إِطراقُهُhis lowering of his head
يُغْني عن الرَّامُشْنِ إِطراقُهُ
وطَرْفُهُand his glance يُغنيsuffices عنin place of الكاسthe cup
وطَرْفُهُ يُغني عن الكاس
His bowed head dispenses with the minstrel,
His lowering of his eyelids suffices over kohl
And his glance dispenses with the cup.
And his glance suffices over a cup
ماnot كنتَyou were ياO عبَّاسُAbbas فيin الفتكِthe deadly assault بيon me
ما كنتَ يا عبَّاسُ في الفتكِ بي
إلاَّexcept كعبَّاسِlike Abbas بنِson of مرداسMirdas
إلاَّ كعبَّاسِ بنِ مرداس
In your deadly assault on me, O Abbas, you were
O Abbas, in valor you are to me
Just like Abbas ibn Mirdas.
