O son of Abu Ayyub, O pinnacle of

    delight in eyes and souls!

Ali returned as the full moon returns, with the

best of fortune when he returned, not the worst.

    So faces grew moonlit—rather, sunlit—

by the face of this moon-bright, sun-bright one.

And now, O chief of the eminent,

of those adorned with eminence and clothed in it,

the best of gifts from you,

O man of noble stock and roots,

is a piece of Ta'if leather, among the

most precious in value and to souls.

Among the arriving traveler's gifts, from what he selected,

one congenial companion chooses it for another.

It is thick in substance and resists

rubbing, yet is not rough to the touch.

And it is radiant: night turns away from

its radiance, its deep darkness routed.

I wear it as a leather boot; with it I rival

everyone who rivals me in dress.

So the best thing sought as a gift is what has always been

the mount of the wealthy and the penniless.

On feet there appears, from its beauty,

what crowns do not possess upon heads.

The walker walks nobly in it, and it does not

diminish the seated person's dignity in company.

It has over the sandal the same superiority

that the rose has over the narcissus.
