O plane tree of al-Gharbi, time has left you alone.

May rain water the plane trees—the plane trees of al-Gharb—for your sake.

Two virgin maidens, two sisters, you were.

He who holds command decreed the fate of one of you.

For each of us, separation has erased our companion's traces.

So no perceptible form of him remains, nor any trace.

Except that I know longing and patience,

While you have neither longing nor patience.

And an eye with copious tears bears witness for me,

Yet you have no tears, copious or scant.

And my longing has already sucked the sap from my stem,

While your stem's green leaves keep the sap flowing.

Ah, how often we journeyed to your two homes,

And wine journeyed to the homes of our minds,

In days when love clothed us in the shade of you both,

In two robes whose hems the blossoms embroidered.

A lover and a beloved—whoever saw us would say,

In delight at us: 'This is a crescent moon, and that a full moon.'

May God water that time—a time now gone,

And, after it, separation closed the door of union.

And oh, if only we had died with it when it died,

Then we would have triumphed—has death any excuse for leaving us?

Did not Jamil die of love, and Urwa,

And Qays—and did not Ghaylan and al-Ghamr die likewise?
