O dwellings of loved ones that are no dwellings,

I saw you as homes of the absent who are present.

close, yet far apart in circumstance,

a resting place for travelers' packs, company after company,

Graves entrusted with forms—we once knew

their beauties as treasures kept in palaces.

A woman questions me, though not yet

has her heart harbored what mine harbors.

She asks me, 'Has the night grown long or not?'

And what is a long night compared with a short one?

Did you not see me? You grieved—and no creature

is harsher toward the distraught than the patient.

At Qinnasrin's gate my tears go forth at evening,

and at dawn, whether I depart at evening or at dawn.

For love of a bier, and for love of a grave,

I yearn for biers and graves.

    weeping with rain over joy.

The faces of lightning within them are unveiled

    from clouds with hanging curtains.

So they clothe the earth in brocade after brocade,

and dress her in silk upon silk.

It greets her with sweet basil and wine,

and bestows blossoms and wallflowers upon her.

With sweet basil that, whenever smelled, keeps

the fragrance of blended perfume speaking for it.
