O cupbearer, whose eyelids have been made to harbor
O cupbearer whose eyelids
Harut or Marut,
Contain Harut or Marut,
ليتَwould that الغزالَthe gazelle رآكhad seen you حتىso that كانit would be لاnot
يرتابُdoubt أنكthat you منهthan it أملحُlovelier لِيْتَاin the neck
Would that the gazelle had seen you, so it would not
If only the gazelle had seen you, he would not
Doubt that your neck is lovelier than its own.
Doubt that you are more graceful than he is.
أودعتَyou placed فيin بطنِthe belly of الزجاجةthe bottle شرْبَةًa draught
جعلتْit began تُوَدِّعto leave behind دُرَّهُits pearl ياقوتاruby
You placed a draught in the belly of the bottle,
You placed in the belly of the bottle a drink
Which began turning its pearl into ruby.
That made rubies bid farewell to their splendor.
وصبغتَand you stained منهاfrom it إذwhen صبغتyou stained أكفّناour palms
صبغاًa stain يشَّبهُresembling عَنْدماًdragon's-blood dye أوor توتاmulberries
And with it, when you stained our palms, you left
When you poured it into our palms
A stain like dragon's blood or mulberries,
You dyed them a color resembling carnelian or blackberries.
وفتيتَand powder مسكٍof musk فيin الأنوفthe nostrils بمزجهاby mixing it

And powdered musk in the nostrils by mixing it,
You crushed musk into the noses by mixing it,
When they begged for their powdered musk.
When its melted musk pleaded for mercy.
وأرقَand was thinned فوقover النارthe fire جوهرُthe substance of جسمهاits body
أحببْhow lovely بذلكthat one جوهراًa jewel منحوتاًcarved
And the substance of its body was thinned over the fire—
And the essence of its body gently bubbled over the fire,
How lovely that carved jewel!
So that its molten essence became beloved.
