ياO خيرَbest of مَنْthose who لبِسَdonned النُّبُprophethood (first part)
يا خيرَ مَنْ لبِسَ النُّبُ
وَّةَprophethood (completion) مِنamong جميعِall الأنبياءِthe prophets
وَّةَ مِن جميعِ الأنبياءِ
O best of those who donned prophethood,
O best of those who donned prophethood
among all the prophets!
Of all the prophets combined
وَجديmy grief علىfor سِبطَيْكَyour two grandsons
وَجدي على سِبطَيْكَ
وَجدٌa grief ليسdoes not يؤذِنُgive notice بانقضاءِof an ending
وَجدٌ ليس يؤذِنُ بانقضاءِ
My grief for your two grandsons
My devotion for your two grandsons
is a grief that gives no sign of ending.
Is endless devotion that does not fade
هذاthis one قتيلُslain by الأشقياthe wicked (first part)
هذا قتيلُ الأشقيا
ءِthe wicked (completion) وذاand that one قتيلُslain by الأدعياءِmen of false lineage
ءِ وذا قتيلُ الأدعياءِ
This one was slain by the wicked,
This is the martyr of the wretched
and that one by men of false lineage.
And that is the martyr of the pretentious
يومَday of الحُسينِHusayn هرقْتَyou shed دمtears (first part)
يومَ الحُسينِ هرقْتَ دم
عَtears (completion) الأرضِthe earth بلnay دمعَthe tears of السَّماءِheaven
عَ الأرضِ بل دمعَ السَّماءِ
Day of Husayn, you shed the tears
On the day of Hussein, you shed blood
of the earth—nay, the tears of heaven.
On the earth, nay tears from the heavens
يومَday of الحُسينِHusayn تركتَyou left باgate (first part)
يومَ الحُسينِ تركتَ با
بَgate (completion) العِزِّglory مهجورَdeserted الفِناءِthe courtyard
بَ العِزِّ مهجورَ الفِناءِ
Day of Husayn, you left the gate
On the day of Hussein, you left the gate
of glory with its courtyard deserted.
Of glory deserted and forsaken
ياO كربلاءKarbala خُلقتِyou were created منfrom
يا كربلاء خُلقتِ من
كربٍanguish عليَّfor me ومنand from بَلاءِaffliction
كربٍ عليَّ ومن بَلاءِ
O Karbala, you were created from
Oh Karbala, you were created from
anguish for me, and from affliction.
Agony for me and from tribulation
كمhow many فيكِwithin you منof وجهٍa face تشَرَّimbibed (first part)
كم فيكِ من وجهٍ تشَرَّ
بَimbibed (completion) ماؤهits freshness ماءَthe water of البَهاءِsplendor
بَ ماؤه ماءَ البَهاءِ
How many a face within you—
How many faces in you were saturated
its freshness drank the water of splendor!
With water like the water of splendor
نفسيmy soul فِداءُa ransom for المُصطَليthe one enduring burning heat
نفسي فِداءُ المُصطَلي
نارَthe fire of الوغىbattle أيَّwhat a اصطِلاءِburning
نارَ الوغى أيَّ اصطِلاءِ
My soul be a ransom for him who endured
My soul is ransom for one ignited
the fire of battle—what a burning!
By the fire of turmoil - what burning!
حيثُwhere الأسِنّةُthe spearheads فيin الجَواthe breastplates (first part)
حيثُ الأسِنّةُ في الجَوا
شِنِthe breastplates (completion) كالكواكبِlike the stars فيin السماءِthe sky
شِنِ كالكواكبِ في السماءِ
Where spearheads in breastplates
Where tongues in the army are like
were like stars in the sky.
Stars in the sky during firmament
فاختارَso he chose دِرعarmor الصَّبرِsteadfastness حيثُsince
فاختارَ دِرع الصَّبرِ حيثُ
الصَّبرُsteadfastness منamong لُبسِthe garments of السَّناءِglory
الصَّبرُ من لُبسِ السَّناءِ
So he chose the armor of steadfastness, since
So he chose the armor of patience where
steadfastness is among the garments of glory.
Patience is the wearing of bliss
وأبىand he refused to yield إِباءَdefiance الأُسدِthe lions إِنَّindeed
وأبى إِباءَ الأُسدِ إِنَّ
الأُسدَthe lions صادقةُsincere الإِباءِdefiance
الأُسدَ صادقةُ الإِباءِ
And he stood defiant with the defiance of lions; indeed,
And he refused refusal of lions, for
lions are true in their defiance.
Lions are honest in refusal
وقضىand he died كريماًnoble إِذْwhen قَضىhe died
وقضى كريماً إِذْ قَضى
ظمآنَthirsty فيamong نَفَرٍa band ظِماءِthirsty ones
ظمآنَ في نَفَرٍ ظِماءِ
And he died nobly, when he died
And he passed away nobly when he passed
thirsty among a band of thirsty men.
Thirsty among thirsty people
منَعوهُthey denied him طعمَthe taste of الماءِwater لاmay ... not
منَعوهُ طعمَ الماءِ لا
وَجَدواthey find لِماءٍin water طعمthe taste of ماءِwater
وَجَدوا لِماءٍ طعم ماءِ
They denied him the taste of water—may they not
They denied him the taste of water, not
find in water the taste of water!
Finding water that tasted like water
مَنْwho ذاis that one لِمَعقُورِfor him whose ... is hamstrung الجَواthe steed (first part)
مَنْ ذا لِمَعقُورِ الجَوا
دِthe steed (completion) مُمالِwith ... toppled أعوادِthe poles of الخِباءِthe tent
دِ مُمالِ أعوادِ الخِباءِ
Who is there for him whose steed was hamstrung,
Who is there for him sheltered under
whose tent poles were toppled?
Tent poles of tattered tents?
مَنْwho للطَّريحِfor the fallen one الشّلْوِthe body عُرnaked (first part)
مَنْ للطَّريحِ الشّلْوِ عُر
ياناًnaked (completion) مُخَلَّىabandoned بِالعَراءِin the open
ياناً مُخَلَّى بِالعَراءِ
Who is there for him whose body lies fallen,
Who is there for the paralyzed man
naked, abandoned in the open?
Lying bare and exposed in the desert?
مَنْwho للمُحنّطِfor the embalmed one بالتُّراwith dust (first part)
مَنْ للمُحنّطِ بالتُّرا
بِdust (completion) وللمُغسَّلِand for the washed one بالدّماءِwith blood
بِ وللمُغسَّلِ بالدّماءِ
Who is there for him embalmed with dust,
Who is there for the embalmed in dust
and washed with blood?
And the washed in blood?
مَنwho لابْنِfor the son of فاطِمةَFatima المُغيَّhidden away (first part)
مَن لابْنِ فاطِمةَ المُغيَّ
بِhidden away (completion) عنَfrom عُيُونِthe eyes of الأولياءِloyal friends
بِ عنَ عُيُونِ الأولياءِ
Who is there for Fatima's son, hidden away
Who is there for Fatima's son, vanished
from the eyes of his loyal friends?
From the eyes of saints?
